I have replaced the starter solenoid, starter motor, battery (6v) and still when depressing the starter switch all I get is a click. I thought my bendix spring wouldn't release but replacing the starter motor wasn't the answer. Mine is a 1950 8N..What next?. I've had other owners tell me they have had the same problems and pulling the starter motor helped, but that seems silly everytime this occurs.

Al,

I would check and clean all the connections involving the starting circuit. positive battery post, negative post, ground, solenoid,... also if the battery cables show signs of corrosion they may not be carrying enough current to turn over the engine.

When all you get is a click from the solenoid the first thing to check is the ground connections from the battery.

I agree with BB. Have had this happen several times (48 8N) and it has always been a loose connection. Usually the battery to solonoid. Someday I'm going to put a lock washer on.

If your solenoid clicks when you hit the button then you know you are getting voltage to the solenoid coil. I would suspect a bad connection at either the battery, the solenoid or the copper strap from the solenoid to the starter post. The starter draws some high amperage, so if the connections are not realy clean, it won't get enough juice to turn over. I hope it's something this easy.

Try to jump start it from a 12v system. PLACE THE TRACTOR IN NUETRAL. Connect one side of battery to tractor ground. Connect the other side to the starter side of the solinoid. If the starter spins, try it again with the 6v/push button. If not, remove starter and bench test. If it does spin you likely have a bad wire or a bad solinoid. Remember, the 6v system must be clean and tight.

Al, your starter could be stuck. Put in 3rd gear and rock the tractor back and forth by hand until you see the fan move.
