Howdy all,
1942 9n.

Battery came loose and slid back, causing the POS (Woven POS any way you look at it!) battery cable to rub against the guage causing one heck of a short.

Smoke billowed out from under the hood enough to make me think I blew the motor, but it was all electrical. Small wisps of smoke came out of the plug wire holes in the wire conduit and also the front where the dist. wire exits the tube.

Starter button froze up solid, so I know I need a new starter relay. Wires to the relay are a little melted, but no obvious shorts.

Any way to check the wireing harness without removing it? I'd really hate to pull the hood and everything to replace the harness correctly.

Thanks!

Phillip

Unless you've added one.. the 9n/2n doesn't use a starter relay.. just a jiggle stick activated switch. Perhaps it is something that can be cleaned up with some emory paper..

Unless you're a masochist.. i wouldn't remove ANY sheet metal to install a wire harness. Have worked on my 8n, 2n, and NAA.. and not pulled the hood JUST for wireing..etc.

Phillip,
I tend to agree with Jon. Cheap peace of mind to replace it. However, if you can follow wiring diagrams, Neil Reitmeyer drew some and was kind enough to share them. May have to disconnnect the ends of the wire being checked to insure it didn't weld itself to something, giving a false indication of continuity. If you turn on the headlights and your garage door goes up and down, it's time for a new harness.

Other than originality, I can't think of any advantages of a woven battery cable vs. an insulated cable. Anybody got an upside to these things?

Steve,
It's hard to find an insulate ground cable in one gauge. I have an insulated two gauge, but it doesn't get below freezing very often. Below zero, I'd want real good connections on the heavier ground strap.

Availability might be an issue if it weren't for the fact that you are using some size of insulated cable on the negative side. You could just use the same cable on each side. Current in has to be the same as current out.

If it was me I think I'd replace the harness anyway. New harness is $15 (cheap) and straightforward to replace if you do one wire at a time. You can do it without pulling the hood, although it's easier with the hood off.

Just my $.02

Jon
