Can I use the Zane thing even if my 9n doesn't have a draft control lever? Do all 9n's have a draft control. I looked and only have 1 lever for the hitch.

Al,

You may be confusing, Draft control and Position Control. The 9N has Draft control (big spring under seat) Draft control maintains a steady pull when using a plow or other ground device.

What I suspect you are wanting is Position control. And yes you can add it to your 9N.

Just be aware that there are several after market devises that add draft control. And they all work fine. The Zane Thang is not the end all and be all for position control as some may have you believe.

There is the Fergy Positioner, and the Zane Thang made commercially for around $80.00 and there are free plans for a positioner you can make your self if your the least bit handy.

The plans are available in the Photo archives... search under position control. A picture is available a few pages down under the thread "Make it Yourself" or something like that.... It has some 20 posts so it is not hard to find. The same pic is on the Ferg board on page 1... same title.

Hope this helps
Jeff

You can also make your own position control device. If you look at the pics you can figure out how it works. Check out the rest of the pictures by searching "Parts and Pieces" for "position control"

You sure can Al, in fact that is the reason he created it. This little device makes your 9N perform like an 8N. All it does is give your 9 the position control that it lacks. Good luck
Ron

Hey all,

To expand on the questioning of this, then what does the quadrant do? Is the quadrant setting simply for lifting and lowering so that you don't have to move the lever all the way up or down? If I get a "Zane Thang" can I lose my limiter chains?
Wife is always trying to figure out what I want for Christmas. Maybe I just found it.

Safety & blue skies,

Jeff

The quadrant is used to set the depth your plow (and other tillage type devices) stays in the ground. The unfortunate thing is that with this setup there really isn't a way to stabilize a device in one position off the ground. So without a Thang, you have to keep your eye on the implement, and constantly adjust the lever to maintain the height of the implement. This is impractical, and frankly dangerous.

The Solutions are limiter chains or position control. The problem with chains is that they are just one more thing to hook up, and when using them for your brush hog for example, they don't allow you to vary the implement height constantly for the job. A thang does. When I got my 2N, I had no idea of this limitation, and I was close ot getting rid of it, even thugh I had bought limiter chains.

Snow Plowing, using my 3-point scoop, etc. was just impractical without a thang. But I took a chance on this southern gentleman with this newfangled idea, and I was quite astonished that such a simple looking device could solve my problem. Everytime I use it I thing "Duh....why didn't I think of that". About the best 80 bucks I ever spent.

I hope this explains things better.

Take Care
Steve

I seen the photo of the tool and read the testimonies of each person. Can someone post a picture of it on there tractor. I want to see how it looks next to a seat. I looked at Zanes web site and saw nothing. I will buy one but want to be sure I can install it and still have room to sit on my 2n.
