After purchasing my '49 8N nearly a month ago, I've had nothing but problems with it. First the plugs were bad. Then something happened that made it miss and backfire badly and had no power. Worked on diagnosing that problem for two weeks. Then, after some encouragement from some of you and a few bottles of bravery (Michelob), I removed the distributor. Saw that the points were closed, no gap regardless of how the dist cam was turned. So... I went out today, bought new plugs, wires, points, condenser, rotor, dist cap and coil. Gapped the points at .015, the plugs at .025. Put in the new plugs, put the dist back on (felt around to make certain the tang lined up with the groove). Fired her up and she sounded sweeter than ever. When I bought it, it was running okay, but it's running excellent now except for one problem. The engine seems to be running too fast even if it's idling slow. I played with the idle screw and although it did cut down the idle, it seems the engine is running ahead of the idle speed. Does that make sense? I'm almost positive I put the dist in precisely as I removed it, but since I've never seen the inside of a dist or engine or anything mechanical before, I may not have reinstalled it correctly. Is it possible to reinstall the dist 180 degrees off and the timing is advanced too much. Also, I have to move the throttle up to nearly 1/3 now to get an increase in idle speed, which I didn't have to do before, but I can take off in first with no throttle (no load). Just a little confused. What did I miss or screw up??? At least I have a running tractor now!!! Never thought I'd see the day. Thanks to all who helped. Perhaps I'll be able to help a newbie someday :)

8Ngine - I'll try the governor

Thanks for the tips. Considering it's 52 years old, I'm amazed at how good this little tractor runs. I'll tinker with the low idle screw and if that doesn't work, tinker with the governor. Where can the FO-4 Shop Service Manual be found?

Thank you.

You can get the FO-4 from some of the sponcers that make this board possible. Look to the left under marketplace and click on tractor manuals or part suppliers.

I agree with the gov. Grab the rod that goes between the gov and the card and move it forward and backward. See if you can get it down to a good range.

Seems like I remember in all these hapenings of getting this thing going there was some adjusting of the carb going on early on. Depending on the condition of your carb and the adjustments that were recommended when it wasn't running you might have gotten the power valve out of adjustment or the air needle. If it was mine I might try that first. Check on the link below for proper carb adjustment.

There's a wealth of info on that page. I'm reading and got it bookmarked.

Thank you.

Before tinkering with governor, just take hold of the rod that connects the governor to the carburetor throttle arm. move the rod forwards and backward, one way will speed up the engine, the other way will slow it down. If it won't go slower than it normally does now, try adjusting the "low idle" speed screw. It is on the throttle shaft arm on the engine side of the carburetor. Turn screw counter clockwise to reduce idle speed. Also, your linkage rod might be bent. (By the way, nothing is guaranteed about what you will find on these old tractors- I noticed yesterday that my low idle speed screw is missing altogether. No wonder mine can idle down sooo slooow!)

I think you could unhook the governor linkage to see if the idle is normal with no governor control. The governor to carb linkage may be bent a little or there is a little preload on the governor spring. I don't think the governor should be exerting any control over the throttle plate at idle speeds. Someone may have adjusted the governor setting to compensate for the poor ignition performance. Now that you have the ignition system working properly the high idle is showing up.

If you don't have one already get the FO-4 IT Shop Service manual. It has a lot of good information you will need.

Hi there- You didn't say if you had a front mount or side mount distributor, but I know if its a front mount it's almost impossible to install the distributor 180 degrees off unless you use a hammer. I am a newbie too, but seems like your govenor needs some adjustment. I would try that before taking apart the distributor again!!
Good Luck and keep posted on progress!
Johnny

Sounds like your govoner is out of adj. and holding your rpms up even when throttle is put to idle. Sorry I can't help with the fix but there is plenty of good people on this board that can help you out. Good luck Greg NE
