Hate to bother you fellows but here is my problem. I bought this 9N from a widow her husband passed away and he was working on this 9N converting it to 12 volts. I found a 6v and 12 v bat. with it also he had a ballast res. mounted on the frame but wired rong. He had a delco SI-10 mounted on the tractor but its wired rong but I can fix that with no problem. I installed a few SI 10's on other tractors. Now on the square front mount coil on my 9N has marked on it "Taiwan" and also the letter "A" thats all thats marked on it! I don't know if its 6 or 12 v.? Using a Fluke meter I think the Primary coil is from the terminal on top of coil to the "Spring"or "Pig Tail" contact on the under side of coil between those two I get 1/2 ohm resistance. Now is the "Secondary" coil the two points that Contact point that touched the " Top of the Cap that goes to the rotor" and the "Spring or Pig Tail" contact which is the under side of the coil? On that ckt. I get infinity or WIDE OPEN on the meter. I want to bench test this coil using the two balast res to see if I get spark. My other idea is just to get a new 12 coil and use it. Original problem is I get no "Sparkie" as Dell would say...
THANKS Sorry fo all the chatting.

Ron from Pa...

Ron/Pa Hello Ron I'am about 15miles north of Allentown Pa. Also last night I was working on this beast ( 9N ) and with the coil mounted in the tractor I took the dist. cap off and hooked a wire from the terminal of the coil to a spark plug and got good hot sparkies...Sooo now it looks like the cap may be bad, even-tho the cap looks fine it must have a crack or short somewhere. Now today I'll get a new cap from Tractor Supply and work on it tonight when I get home from work.
Thanks Ron

Ron..... ..your squarecan frontmount ignition coil should have about 7000 ohms secondary resistance and about 1 ohm primary resistance. Connect one ohmmeter lead to the top terminal and measure to both bottom coil connectors; springy-thingy about 1 ohm; and edgetab about 7000 ohms. Iff'n yer using the old fashioned analog (needle) ohm meter, (and sometime yer new digital ohmmeter) you have to change "ranges" to get a reading. Iff'n yer meter is ranged to read 1 ohm, it might seem to indicate 7000 ohms as INFINITY (but its not really) Infinity is also considered OPEN. So you gotta be certain of your ohmmeter ranges. Iff'n yer ohmmeter is ranged to read 7000 ohms, yer 1 ohm primary would indicate SHORT (but its not really)..... ...HTH, Dell

Try measuring from top connection to bottom flat spring.

Ohm meters.. even digital ones aren't real good at low range.. that said.. sounds like you may have a 6v one.

Also.. was it really a ballast resistor ont he side of the engine.. or a 12to6v dropping resistor?

If he was planning on using the oem 6v coil.. then he most likely plumbed in a dropping resistor in series with the ballast resistor. That works OK.. A new 12v coil and current limiting resistor may be a better idea.. but that's your 40$ not mine.
