The wiring on my 8n is in fairly bad shape. What is generally the best way to approach rewiring. I've heard that a complete wiring harness from the dealer is $100. It would seem there would be a less expensive way. Thanks for any help.

$100 for a wiring harness sounds steep. I bought one from Ford/New Holland - I think it was $25-$30. Re-wiring the 8N is not a simple task. The wire colors on the aftermarket wiring harness do not match the wire colors in the F04 repair manual. Just be careful and take your time. As you are re-wiring, take the opportunity to clean or replace anything under the hood that needs it.

The main wiring harness for the ignition is about 13.00 from Don's at 8N. The rest of the wire can be purchased from your local hardware store along with the terminals and you can do it yourself. I think Don's has the complete wiring harnesses also, but I just replaced my mail harness and the rest I just did myself with what I had in the shop. Just remember the wire gauge size. Look in the archives and look for main wiring and you will get posts even for the wiring diagrams. Only takes a few cool-aids to wire it all. Have fun.

I agree.
I just replaced my wiring harness. I think it was a Tisco brand from Tractor Supply. I know it was less than $20 and it was a perfect fit and match.

I did go to NHF for the spark plug wires. $21. The good folks at Gennesse(spelling?) recommended those when I was buying my electronic ignition module.

Get yourself a wiring diagram and a volt-ohm meter. It helps to double check the connections your not sure of. I replaced one wire at a time after verifying both ends with the ohm meter.

Runs great now.

If you replace the wiring yourself,I have not had much luck with the press on terminals, even with di-electric grease, after a while they corrode and produces a bad connection. I recommend that you solder all terminals. You can buy little solder strips at radio shack that you wrap around the wire end and heat with a match or lighter soldering the connection. This has worked fine for me.HTH
