Low to No Oil pressure

Need some help with this one. Have always had good oil pressure of 20-30 on my 9N. Last week I changed oil with 30 weight. Don't know if it changed then, but noticed while discing yesterday that oil pressure dropped to zero. Checked oil lines which appeared to be clear and replaced oil guage. When started, guage read 5 and built up to ten psi when revved. Began discing and pressure dropped to zero. Attempted to prime through oil filter cannister and pressure is back up to 5 psi which is still not good. I started the tractor with the oil filter out and the cannister filled pretty quickly. Does that mean anything? Some have recommended priming through the oil pressure relief valve. Do I need to remove the hood to get good access to that bolt? I'm not sure which bolt it is. What else could I check out? Thanks.

The pressure relief valve is behind a large hex-head plug on the timing cover toward the upper right corner facing the tractor. It may have a piece of trash in it, or a collapsed spring. Or, the oil pickup tube may have broken loose from the pump body or developed a crack. Check the valve first and if that doesn't solve it, investigate the pickup tube. If you have to pull the pan to check the pickup tube, check the condition of the oil pump as well.

Thanks bg - after reading some of the archive information, I was beginning to think the same thing. I'm going to try these in the order you suggested - easiest first! After reading other related Q & A's, I'm not holding out much hope for the relief valve, but I'll try it. Also, I have heard people mention the oil screen located at the drain pan plug. In the years I have had this tractor, I've not seen one. Is it supposed to drop down with the plug or does it stay inside the pan? And, does it help support the pickup tube? Thanks again.

Russell,
The screen is part of the plug. soldered to it if I remember correctly, They do come loose and give problems getting out. With the screen out try to wiggle the pickup tube with your finger. If it feels firm. Stop, leave it alone...You don't want to knock it loose. the Attachment is not the best and it is better to not attempt fate.. If it is loose You will have to try and fix it. As previously stated, check out the pump while the oil pan is off. Good luck

Tom - check out my message to bg. I got my oil pressure back and I'm happy. I think I'll check for that plug screen NEXT oil change (unless I lose pressure again before then) Thanks.

Thanks for the information Tom. I'll look at it tomorrow. I was surprised to hear there should be a screen there, but it does make sense.

The screen is "supposed" to be attached to the plug and comes out when the plug does. Mine does not have one either. The new aftermarket(Tisco?) plugs come with the screen intact. It may help support the pickup tube and dampen some of the vibration which can cause stress cracks.

Just wanted to let you know I have oil pressure back!! It appears as if the pump may have lost it's prime. I pulled the oil relief valve as you recommended and all looked fine. Since I had it out, I shot a few squirts of oil inside the block through the hole as best I could and put it all back together. I have read where others have used this technique to prime the pump. Just for the heck of it I started her up and there it was - running about 35 psi! Yesterday evening I had filled the oil filter cannister with oil a couple of times and started it right away without any improvement. So I'm not sure if the oil cannister trick over night, or the oil through the oil relief valve port made the difference. Either way - I'm happy. Is it possible the pump lost it's prime when I changed the oil? Thanks again for your suggestions.

Thanks again. I'll check it out. Just got home so I didn't get a chance to do anything this evening. I'll work on it tomorrow and keep you posted. I've got a feeling I have a problem with the pickup tube.
