I was out bush hoggin along the hayfield adn the skeeters were coming out it squadrons. They were all over me and curious thing, they were a all over the N too, on the hood, tranny housing etc.

Sure enough when I got back to the barn, she's a quart low on oil and I'm a pint low on O negative.

We've got a great spring hatch of skeeters here in Mo. They like to visit me in swarms they like me so much. Thank the Lord for DEET !! Some days the little SOBs would carry me away if it wasn't for DEET. Wet spring has them thriving.
Later, Lee

That's about the only benefit of being in a 6 year drought....the skeeters go away. I haven't been bothered much by them for about 3 years now.

I live in West Michigan and the bugs are horrible. I live next to a river and I've never had bugs as bad as now. I wonder about those propane powered bug killers. I would probably need one the size of the house the way it's going this year. I have a fogger and that just chases them out for a while. It's so bad we can't go outside near dusk. When you walk across the lawn they come up in a cloud. We have martins and bats too but the bugs are winning so far.

Bob, I live in south TX close to the RioGrande and the skeeters here are thick and big. Last year you cuoldn't go out after dark without a transfusion in yer arm. This year I got one of those propane skeeter vacs at Sam's Club and can hardly believe how great it works! Hardly a bug around at night and I live next to a fairly large Resaca or canal. The one I got says it covers approx 1 and a 1/2 acres. This along with the swallows and dragonflys are keepin us pretty much skeeter free so far. I have 10 acres of pasture and the machine is in the back yard and keeps it clear around the house and livin area

Thanks for the comment on the bug machine. I have been looking at the Sam's Club item and have wondered if they work.

I'm not kidding you, the crop of mosquitos that we have this year is unbelievable. My driveway is 1/4 mile long so it's 1/2 mile for the mail or newspaper. The property is only cleared around the house so it's virtually all woods and the stroll for the paper has turned into being a blood donor.

We have a pool and the wife and I like to sit by the pool and enjoy a beer once and awhile. Now if there's no wind to keep the bugs away we get eaten alive. The bug machine would probably be the ticket for us.

Thanks again for the response.

They are so bad here in south Louisiana, you have to make sure that right before sun down that you are inside the house or you will likely get anemic pretty quick. If no in the house you can wave your arms and hit thousands. Where are those bats here, they would get healthy quick on this mess of bugs. And all of this rain is just helping um breed even more.

Yeah, we lived down there (St. Charles Parish, West bank) surrounded by swamp water for 3 years, and they are big enuf to carry you off. We miss all the good food, the good fishin', etc., but it's nice to be able to go out in the evening and not get carried off by them skeeters.

We have tons of tree and barn swallows plus purple martins and bats at our place in Ohio -- don't have many mosquitos to worry about. Every time I cut the back 5 with old Bessie ('48 8N) and the finish mower, swallows are out in force to pick up all the bugs that get stirred up. Fun to watch'em in the evening swooping around after the bugs - they'll go right down to the pond surface to get'em & a bath at the same time. There are hundreds of bats up on our NY farm -- black cloud for 10 minutes coming out of the old structures every evening -- never been bitten by a mosquito up there. Did wake up one morning at camp with a bat sitting on my nose, but he took off quick when I came awake in a hurry!!!

I got an old shed with a window missing but I won't replace it. The shed is home to a bunch of swallows that are constantly feeding on the mosquitoes and all sorts of any flying bug. Those birds are all the time swooping and diving over the pond and wetlands.
I think I have bats too but I don't know where they hang out.

Get it?

Bats...hang out....? d:-)

Purple Martins are reputed to control mosquitos and you can buy houses to attract them.
I have a Nighthawk working the homestead too. I love that bird because it is so cool to watch it gliding just under the canopy scarfing up any bug that makes the mistake of popping up. A Nightwawk will be like 9" long with a 23" wingspan. Cool looking bird and valuable because it feeds on bugs. I have a 50'-60' snag I leave. I hear hawks, and I suspect owls, like working from the barren branches of a snag. They can see better from a snag than from a leafy tree branch. They take out a lot of mice and the cats keep their distance when a big ol' red tail hawk or owl is staking out the place. The cats are hard on my quail so I really don't like em around.
Anyway, encourage the right wildlife to control the pests. Cheap, low maintence, and just nice to have around.

Bill, I'm a cheesehead right next door to ya! Lived in the Twin Cities for a short spell. We've had so much dad-blamed rain over here. Seemed to dry out for a bit, then more rain tonite. Looks like I'll be lucky to first crop hay in by the Fourth. Horse Flies havent hit us yet, but should be around the corner.
