I have a '39 9N. I am having problems not getting any spark at the plugs. This is a 6V pos ground system. Here is what I have checked:
6 volts at battery, no resistor in circuit so I have 6 volts at the top post of front mount distributor/coil. I have the NEW (for 6V pos grnd tractors) electronic ignition system installed.
At the top brass post I have a circuit to ground and as I slowly rotate the engine by hand the ground circuit opens and closes as it should.
I have continuity thru the primary and secondary windings on the coil but with high resistance on the secondary. I have installed a new coil, dist cap and rotor. I have checked continuity on plug wires and plugs themselves (which are new) and they all check out.

I am at my wits end... I can't think of what to check next. Any advice or help is certainly appreciated. I wish I could remember the name of the company that makes the new ignition convertion kit but I think it is Pertronix.

Andrew,

Pull the whole distributor assembly off the tractor and test it on the bench. Use a battery charger for the power source.

Clamp the metal ear of the distributor in your vise. Put coil and cap back on the distributor. Connect one lead of the battery charger to the top post on the coil and the other lead to the vise. You now have a complete circuit for testing. Put a plug wire in any terminal in the cap. Hold the other end of the plug wire about 3/16" from the vise. Spin the tang on the back of the distributor. You should get a spark every time the rotor passes the contact for the plug wire. If not, you work on it right in the vise.

Good luck,
Danny

I can't comment specifically on the 6v e-ignition.. I havn't seen one.

I would put your volt meter on the top post, and see what you have while cranking.

If there is an additional power feed to the module.. see what it has while cranking.

I'm surprised to find that the kit wants you to use no resistor in line with the old style coil. Unless it is compensated for by the design of the module.

If I had to -guess- and that is what this is.. a BIG guess. I would say the module is very sensitive to low voltage.. and then when cranking your tractor over, that threshold is crossed.

Try hooking it all back up.. turn on your key.. but jump the tractor's starter from another battery.. even a 12v one. Just don't hit the starter button.. that will keep the ignition and starter circuits isolated.

If it starts fine like that.. sounds like the voltage on your battery drops too much due to starter load.. bad cables, dirty connections, or a bad starter.

Only a WAG..

YOU ARE GETTING GOOD ADVICE. AINT IT WONDERFULL. YOUR PERTRONIX HAS A CAUTION ABOUT RUNNING ON 6V. LOW VOLTAGE COULD AFFECT ITS OPERATION. IF YOUR PERTRONIX IS BAD-THEY HAVE A 30 MONTH WARRANTY. GOOD LUCK

Thank you for all the advice everyone...
I was really getting frustrated because everything I check was acting the way it was supposed to.
I did finally figure the problem out...
I pulled all the plugs out so the engine could rotate without any drag and checked a plug against the ground and voila!!, SPARK... BIG, BEAUTIFUL, BLUE SPARK!!! IT'S ALIIIVE!!!!

Sooo, stuck the battery charger on it for the night!!.....

Thanks again!!!!
