Just starting to restore Grandpap's old 1950 or 51 8N, and got a couple of questions?

1. According to Smith's site, the serial number says it should have Ford embossed rear fenders. It doesn't, and I have no reason to believe they are not original. (Serial 8N-361007, side distr, proofmeter.)Should this number have embossed fenders?

2. What is "cadmium plating," and where can I get some?

Thanks

Cad is a plating process, electricly applied, and is becoming more expensive and difficult to find someone to do it.

Th gold color you find on many nuts and bolts is cad, and some of the silver or grey finish is, some stuff that is silver is zinc plated instead.

Cad, as a plating process is dangerous to the operator, it is a metal that accumulates in your body and slowly kills you, the wastes from the process are very hazardous and expensive to dispose of.

You can find the books Dell mentions on this web site, if you haven't figured it out YT is a biz selling tractor parts and accessories, very nice of them to operate and manage these boards. The I&T FO-4 manual is found cheapest on Wal-mart.com in the book section. just do a search for fo-4. $19.28 total inc shipping. You may want to order them all from YT just to make it one order, not two or three.

Our late 1950 8n doesn't have scripted fenders either.

Cad plating is more like galvanizing than like paint. You can find a metal finisher that can plate your parts.
What's cad plated? The lug and axle nuts?

My 1952 model has non scripted fenders as well. They are original 8N fenders (or 9N/2N), but may have been damaged sometime in the past and replaced with earlier model fenders. I like the scripted fenders, but not enough to pay the steep price they bring when I have excellent fenders on there now.

If you are talking about the metal paint for the rear rims, you can find them at online 8N parts providers. Check the link on the left labeled "Tractor Parts".

Good luck,
Dan

Actually several things are listed as cadmium plated; rear lug nuts, (not axle nuts,) Fuel tank, throttle and throttle plate, spark plug tubes, etc.

Just wasn't sure what it was.

Thanks guys.

P.S. As I get further into this thing, I'll be a real pain asking questions on this board.
