More on lower link pins, etc.

Well I replaced the loose and leaking lower link pin (NCA-563-C) today and tightened it up to 145-149 ft-lbs. Put in a new cotter pin. Now Dell wrote a couple days ago that the pin I got from NH may not be for the 8N. It was the part numer in the I&T manual and parts catalog from Ford. But it is different in overall length and the thread size is 3/4" not 5/8" like the old pin. Also the new pin has a taper the whole length as opposed to the old pin which had a gap in he taper. The new pin fit in just fine. In fact the old pin would probably have worked if I just retorqued it. But since I had the new pin I put it in. The pins are identical outide the case so the hookup should not be a problem. ( I have said that before too :-).) The left side pin looks good so I have not decided if I will replace it since the left trumpet is off and I never want to get in there again.

Also a general question on the proper use of a cotter pin. There are two ways to the pin into a castillated nut. One is 90 degrees with respect to the nut slot and the other is parallel to the nut slot. What is the right way or does it really make any difference? Both ways will keep the nut from turning but one seems to be tighter in the slot (pin parallel to the nut slot).

I also talked to a rebuilder on 8N and he said not too use Sureseals on the 8N. ( Looks you were right on again Dell!!).

Also one more tidbit. While scrapping, sanding, and wire brushing the area on the left side between the left hydralic inspection port and the bottom of the transmisson case I saw a 8N4024 cast into the case and below it on a plate with three small screws the number 25H M27. My parts book lists the center housing as 4025 and it does not agree with the numer stamped into the housing. Anybody have any knowledge on why the part number difference and what does the plate numer 25H M27 meanThanks, Alex

Ford's casting numbers and Ford's part numbers are generally close, but not equal. The casting number would generally put you in the ball park area, but we had a seperate book that would convert the old casting numbers to valid part numbers.

Sounds like a Massey number!
