Hello, I just purchased a Ford 9n and I am wondering about the benefits of converting the 6 volt system to a 12 volt system. I am also wondering about whether the electronic ignition kits that are available are beneficial over the regular points and condensors.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

One overlooked advantage of a 6-volt system is that you can let the tractor set for months without starting it and it will usually start up when you get on it. 12-volt drains twice as fast, actually much faster than that because you have a drain through the alternator diodes. If you do not use your 12-volt much, consider installing a disconnect at your battery post. Mike.

Ron..... ...I can buy alotta ignition points for the $200 cost of a 12 volt electronics ignition system and $200 cost of a 12 volt conversion to run the transistor ignition system.

A good tune-up and the 6 volt MANTRA: "keep'em clean, bright, and tight" is a good place to start..... ...Dell, a 12 volt advocate for the right reasons

That said, I haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6 volt 52 8N, and I know how to do it right the 1st time. Infact I know how to do it right 8 ways.

Like Jon sez.....lot's of these N's start at -10 or lower on 6v. About the only reason I can see to convert to 12v is to run auxilary equipment. A well tuned & maintained tractor will start and run just fine on 6v; I've got three of them, all 6v, and while it rarely gets to 10 above here in VA, I've had no problems. And, the local tractor dealer, in business for 30+ years, will not work on any 12v conversion unless he installed it himself because so many of them are screwed up. As to costs, I just got the neighbors 2N generator back from the shop after a total rebuild; cost was $78.

I purchased a 9N in late February, so I guess that my reply to your question is recent enough... One of the previous owners had cobbled up a conversion from 6 volt to 12 volt... I ended up doing a complete job of it after stripping the tangle of wires.... the tractor starts great, runs very well and I am looking forward to putting on 12 volt lights that will actually provide light. Now, I have friends with tractors with original 6 volt systems and they start and run fine... the real question is whether your tractor is starting and running now and why do you want to change.... both voltages will make a tractor in good condition with good compression start and run...I do not know if this will help, but you can e-mail me with more specific questions and I will answer to my best ability.
On the site N series.com they have good illustrations of the conversion.

If you check the archives on this board you will see a whole variety of opinions on this.

Basically it seems that as long as your electrical system is properly maintained there isn't much need to convert to 12V unless you have 12V accessories you want to run.

I suppose if you had say a bad generator and weren't concerned with keeping things original it might be the same price to go to 12V as to repair the 6V then it might make sense.

Where I live it regularly gets down to -10 degrees F and below in winter yet I have never had problems starting my 8N with original 6V system.

Just my 2 cents,
Jon

Thank you all for your opinions. The tractor actually starts the first time, every time. There is so much talk about conversions that I did not know if there were problems with the 6 volt systems. I will not change the system to 12 volt. I can;t justify the costs if there is nothing wrong with th 6 volt systems. I haven;t changed points and condensors since my 1974 Pontiac Firebird so I didn;t know if the points were always a problem. The guy I bought the 9n from really took care of it so with proper maintenance I should have nothing to worry about. Thank you again for your opinions.
