I have determined what i have thanks to smiths tractor page. It is a 1940 9n . I have ordered the fo4 book and am waiting to get at my project. This tractor will need a few parts of course, the dash being my biggest concern, can i find one of these? Mine has a crack where the gauge is on the left. The guy i bought it from said it ran 5 or 6 years ago but it needed an alternator and from what i can see some electrical work as well. I gave him $500.00 for it. Thank you all for your quick response about manuels. this seems to be a great site with great people. How many of these tractors are out there? Is this rare? Thank you *9n23347

Welcome to the N world....I have a '40 9N31965....I posted a question previously about how many N's they may be still around, and the thought by some folks was about 500,000. This would include 9,2 and 8N's. If your just getting going with working on yours you'll be pleased by two things as you go along....one is the availabilty of parts, and the other is the incredible resourse you have with this board. I have taken apart and fixed things on mine I would never have attempted without the help of the folks here...saved a pile of money and gained a lot of knowledge and mechanical confidence....good luck, Brian.

my 9n is #31649. I suspect the dash was once aluminum but now it is a cast iron dash with cast iron tranny cover too. Given your number, our tractors were made within a day or two of each-other.

That's still a sweet looking tractor. Is it being towed? I remember when I had to have mine towed.

yep, being towed alright. Just wish I had the 9 other dogs I used to own harnessed and into the gangline, now that would have been an interesting training cart! and beat the heck out of a wobbly stripped down ATV 3 wheeler bouncing down the logging roads at 15 MPH! Probably why I turned grey during those years. I Liked your photo. LOL. It's humurous...worth framing and hanging in your house someday Tyler.

Somehow, I had you pictured as being a LITTLE closer to the Whimpsters age. Still lookin' good; surprised you let it play in the snow.

and yes Russ (above) I am close to the same year as the 40 9N. Now, I'll need to find a 42 - 2N to have one for my 42nd in June!

Thanks for the picture, very nice tractor....mine had a badly cracked aluminum dash and tranny cover which I replaced, but kept...I didn't realize the significance of them when I replaced them....a couple of things about yours...is the grill with the horizontal bars on yours original, do you know? I see alot of variations in the books I've looked at during the 1940 model year....also I've seen some 9n's with the air breather extension through the hood like yours, were they made that way, or modified..... Regards, Brian.

Bri9N: There is a lot of variation about the 1940 model tractor. It was a transition year from 1939 models with aluminum dashboards and tranny covers and grille's, to 40 with less aluminum, to the 41 with solid center front steel grille. Is there a "true 1940 9N" that can be identified with specific characteristics? After a lot of reading, studying pictures, networking with the good people on this board, talking with parts guys, I've come to the conclusion that 40 9N's had the aluminum dash, cover, and front grille at least through mid-year. After that it's a crap shoot. So many production line variables are involved that it was a mash of available parts. Duane Helman, at Rosewood Machine 513-362-3871 produces this aluminum grille...and it's exact as original.

The air cleaner tube was a dealer option on these tractors. They wer made that way, and requested from the factory. Now, if I can only find an aluminum dash and tranny cover! 9N'er

to,bri9n- i will probably go with the12 vot system on my 9n. this means origonality is not a huge issue with me. Mabey you would be interested in the aluminum pieces from my 9n ,dash tranny cover, hood, Not sure yet as to weather i can replace these pieces or not ,im real new at this bussnes. Let me know if they can be replaced if you have time.

nice picture ,i have a long way to go and not a few parts. my air breather ,when there was one, came up through the hood. My front grill has been smashed real bad, its a goner to. Nothing that a thousand dollars wont fix.

you will have to factor in the ol' contingency fund for the unforseen repairs and accessories that just crop up. maybe, "nothing but another $2,000.00 can't fix!!!"

Yep, my old 9N was lesser than bedraggled (whatever that means). It was a mess, and busted, smashed, and deader than a doorknob (whatever that means too...I've never seen an alive doorknob).

p.s. I tried sending a note about some decent books, but for some reason it was not allowed to be posted to your inquiry about restoration books. I'll try again in a separate posting. good luck. 9N'er

I HAVE THE SAME TYPE OF DASH AND IT WAS BROKE IN THE SAME PLACE. AFTER 20 YEARS I FINALLY HAD IT WELDED AT A SHOP SINCE I WASN'T SET UP TO WELD ALUMINUM. IT LOOKS LIKE BRAND NEW NOW!

Greg, is that an aluminum dash with a crack? They are indeed rarer than the steel ones, you might want to save it from help from someone on this board. Yours should have 4 spoke steering wheel as well and a generator as opposed to alternator. It may have been converted as many have. You might also want to check and see if your transmission cover is aluminum as I believe some of them were still showing up at that time. Take your time and ask questions. Hope this helps.

yes, the dash is made of aluminum as well as the transmission cover. I do have a generator not an alternator. Inside under the battery cover it appears to have broken away from the dash. Im not sure if this is supposed to be this way or not, as yet to take delivery of my books. any info on this tractor is very much appreciated. Also the steering wheel is a 3 spoke and in bad shape.
