9 N wants to Stall when I increase the Throttle?

First of all folks thanks for all your help so far with the info. on this 9N. I had no "sparkies" but got that problem fixed.(GOOD SPARKS NOW!) Next got no gas thru the carburetor but did a carb. overhaul with a "carb. overhaul kit" now she got gas. Last night when I finished the carb. overhaul put it togeather and she starts right up. It runs fine on idle but soon as I give her the throttle she wants to stall, I adjusted the Idle mixture and the Power mixture but to no use. I did what the instructions said. take both Idle and Power screws in to stop and back out about 1 and 1/2 turns and go from there. Any ideas what could cause it to want to stall soon as I throttle up?
Thanks
Ron (Eastern Pa.)

If you can back out the main jet to get it where it doesn't stall out when you pull on the throttle maybe you can get a read from this test:

There is a quick test you can do from the seat. Warm the tractor to normal operating temp. If it won’t warm up or maintain a constant operating temp then the tstat may be wacked.
Put the tractor in high gear and get her rolling forward just a little bit and at idle and then quickly pull the throttle to 1/2 speed. Do this with your good brake partially on. You brake because you want a heavy load on the engine as you give it lots of gas in high gear. You want to make it pull really hard. If the clutch slips then you’ll have to adjust or replace it.
1. If it backfires the fuel mix is too lean or you have a shorted ignition (pull the spark plug wires one at a time and watch for a regular spark without a miss) or sticky valves (you can hear a sticky valve).
2. Your timing is ok if you hear a constant slight pinging (spark knock). 3. If it doesn't ping set the timing and make sure the mechanical advance is free to operate. I hear that if the wrong screw is used on the points it can interfere with the mechanical advance weights. My weights were dirty and sticky.
4. If it pings excessively then set the timing. If that doesn’t correct the pinging then pull all the plugs, clean em up, and set the gap. While you have them out take a compression test on each cylinder with the carb throttle full open. You are looking for 90psi minimum at starter cranking speed. If you get normal compression then you need to check and set that timing! If you have 140+psi pull the head and clean the carbon off it. Make sure the valve stems are not gummy. Low compression says ‘fix my guts’ or it’s a rebuild that isn’t broken in yet.
5. If the engine pulls evenly and there is no indication of late spark or excessive carbon, check the system for a lean mixture.
6. If the engine pulls unevenly then check the spark at the spark plug boots.

Ron..... ..yer reports of 1-1/2 turns on yer carb adjusts and then they have "no effect" concerns me. The fact that yer engine don't take a throttle increase, implies TOO LEAN ...or... bad governor with flat balls and grooved race.

I adjust the DOWNpointing mainjet to 1-1/2 turns and LEAVITT. I then adjust the SIDEpointing idle mixture for maximum idle rpms, not smoothest idle, MAX idle rpms. My idlemix usually about 3/8 turn. Idle rpms is a SLOOOooow 400 rpms, set by the behind throttle screw. Remember, idlemixture is BASSACKWARDS, out for lean and in for enrich.

I check the governor while engine is running by trying to "hand-jazz" the carb-govr throttle rod. Does it fight you? as you try to increase engine rpms? Do it, it won't byte ya. Iff'n yes, probably good, iff'n it don't fight ya, probably worn governor. Check yer I&T FO-4 for more governor checkout procedures..... ....Dell

In this rebuild.. did you replace the idle and main jets? if so.. is it possible you swapped them? the'll both screw in either hole..

Dell reccoments using a small drill bit as a no/go gauge if you can't tell which one is smaller.. though I forget the size.

SouNdguy : When I did the rebuild all I replaced was the Idle Mixture screw and spring for that screw. I also replaced the Float Needle Valve and seat that it goes in.I adjusted the Float for the 1/4 inch above the gasket. All new gaskets and had the carb. soak a few hours in Carb. cleaner which made the carb. look like new. I used the old Power Mixture screw and it was nice and clean cause there was no Power Mixture screw in the kit.( ALSO in the kit were TWO IDLE MIXTURE screws one with 15 degrees and one with 30 degrees taper I used the one that matched the one in my carb.).
Thanks

If you didn't remove the idle and mainjet.. and presumably they were correct before.. then I would guess it may be still just too lean.. try what the other poster said.. 1/8 turn out and check..
