Hello,

I parked my tractor a few days ago. I went to crank it today (after I changed a flat), and the tractor won't start. I started is spinning over making a "whirling" sound, but I'm not getting the cranking action. I ran a jumper cable from the HOT battery post to the starter post, same "whirling" sound. Just a lot of spinning, no cranking.

Thanks.

Thanks for the help so far. I'm starting to do what yall mentioned, any words of wisdom as far as removing the started. I backed the two bolts out from the block housing, but I cannot back the started out. Something in the housing has it locked in. Do I need to just keep on working the starter out or is there something else I'm missing? Thanks in advance.

How difficult is a bendix replacement or should I just rebuild the starter?

Do the easy stuff 1st. Like Dell says, replace the bendix. If you can get the starter in and out, you can replace the bendix. Don't think about rebuilding until you do this first. Steve 8N 169302

PJ..... ...ya gottta holl yer tongue juss sue to remove yer starter (grin)

TIP: don't pull yer 8" long starter bolts all the way out of yer starter 'cuz yer brushes will fall out and you'll learn some new words. (put some 5/16-18 nuts on the ends)

It take some jiggling and angle pointing towards the engine block to clear the starter ring gear. Some guys seem to think they need to remove the water drain and loosen the oilfilter. I don't remember doing that 12 years ago when I replaced my starter bendix drive.

Recommend you get the "new and improved" clutch style starter drive. Your old bendix drive may have lost some parts down in the "spareroom" of the tranny housing..... donnna worry, all N's carry spare bendix parts down there.

Removal of starter drive is really quite eazy. Just lightly clamp the starter UPSIDEDOWN so you can use yer left elbow to pressdown on the bendix drive springload to tap-out the pin with yer right hand hammer..... ....Dell

Seems like this was discussed recently and there were about 3 or 4 or 5 different types of Bendixs. There's the counterwound spring type and the counter-spiral grooved sliding gear/and/ratchet type....those are the two i've seen. Dell, just exactly how is the "new type" you prefer best described? Part number? Mfr?
Thanks.

Yup, bendix. If you are lucky, you might be able to get the bendix to thow-out and engage your flywheel by tapping on the starter as close to the bell housing as you can get.... again, if your lucky.
Rebuilt my starter last Winter because the bendix kept kicking out while trying to start. Parts are cheap, doesn't take very long to do the job. Good Luck !

Sounds like you may need a new bendix.
