ORC with post hole digger?

I bought a post hole digger from TSC and it mates fine to the PTO with the ORC... Of course the problem is the shaft is now too long so the head will only stay level to a hole depth of about 2 feet.... SO..... should I remove the ORC for digging post holes? or limit myself to 2 foot deep holes (probably all I really need) or buy an extender or ????? Suggestions appreciated.
thanks
Gary TX

Gary,

There is not enough enertia in the spinning auger to need an ORC. Take it out! I hope the shaft on the tractor is 1-3/8", otherwise you will need an adapter to get the size correct.

Remember, the pto only turns the auger IN! You CANNOT unscrew a stuck auger with the tractor! I take short "bites" in the hole being careful NOT to lift the auger out of the hole. A turning auger out of the hole is a "Killer!" thrashing around, so watch out!!!

Be safe,
Larry

I concur, you don't NEED an ORC with a posthole digger (not that it'll hurt the digger any), but... the ORC MAY be your 1 1/8 - 1 3/8 adapter, as well.

If that's the case you've got a couple of options;
1. Cut the PTO drive shaft (to the posthole digger) a bit shorter.
2. Get a 'sleeve type' 1 1/8 - 1 3/8 adapter (which, I've heard, are not very sturdy).
3. Replace your 1 1/8 PTO shaft with a newer 1 3/8 PTO shaft.

Of course, if you've already upgraded to a 1 3/8 PTO, then no problem... Pull the ORC and go to town...

Steve

BTW... If you're anywhere near Magnolia... can I borrow your posthole digger? :-)
