Saturday I pick up a new to me 8N. Checked all the fluids and greased it. Fill with gas. Very clean in the float bowl. Ran it with a Ford 210J Disk for about 3 hours. Then it started starving for gas. Where should I start looking for the problem? help with acheck list would be appreciated. Thanks. It ran really smooth until.

Don't overlook the possibility that your fuel problem is really an ignition problem. A weak coil will overheat after a time and the result is a tractor that runs ragged for awhile and then dies. After it cools off, it restarts and works fine again until the coil gets too hot again. Somebody around here once said 80% of "fuel" problems are found in the ignition system.

It doesn't hurt to check all the fuel screens, especially if you just bought the tractor. Just don't be surprised if the same problem occurs after cleaning all of them and maybe even rebuilding the carb.

Another possibility (also heat related) would be vapor lock. Check your fuel line from the tank to the carb. Make sure it's not too close to the manifold or other heat source. Sometimes these old tractors get the fuel lines replaced and rerouted over the years.

What Steve sez.....plus, the vent in the gas tank could be clogged. While the usual symptom is the engine just stops due to the vacumn lock, it is easy enough to check: remove the gas cap. Of course, if you have a vented gas cap, a clogged vent in the tank won't matter.

There're 3 filter screens to look at.
1. A 'tube shaped' screen that sticks up into the tank (unscrew the sediment bowl/shutoff valve assembly, after draining the tank).
2. A flat screen in the top of the sediment bowl (remove the sediment bowl from the shutoff valve assembly... you don't have to drain the tank for this one).
3. Remove the brass elbow that the fuel line connects to at the carburetor. The final screen is inside the carb on this elbow fitting (again, you don't have to drain the tank for this one).

You can check flow by removing the drain plug on your carburetor (with a pan/bucket under the carb) and open up the shutoff valve. There should be a strong, steady stream...

A place to start...

Steve
