Bought a Jubilee yesterday

I fulfilled my desire for another old Ford tractor yesterday. I bought a 1953 Ford Jubilee (at least that is what the previous owner said it was) that has been sitting up for a few years. It is not in running condition and needs a major restoration. I suppose it does have potential but I must admit it seemed to be in worse shape than I thought once I got it home. I was able to scratch off enough old paint to read the serial # today. It looks like it is NAA 49956 followed by a diamond symbol.

So far I have got the clutch unfrozen and the engine spinning freely. There was about as much water in the transmission and differential as oil. I did find a few small fragments of gear teeth in the bottom of the transmission drain plug. This project may be an adventure in transmission repair. There doesn’t seem to be any water in the engine oil and the radiator has greenish water.

I paid $650 plus $60 to have it hauled to my place. I may have paid too much for it in the condition it is in but the rear tires are in excellent condition. Only time will tell how things turn out, however, I’m having fun already.

Best regards to all,

Rick H. Ga.

RICK, I THINK YOU DID WELL, WE ALL DESERVE A DEAL ONCE IN A WHILE. I BOUGHT A 640 LAST YEAR WITH ALL NEW PAINT. LOOKS GREAT BUT MOTOR IS SET UP AND THE TIRES ARE SHOT. WHEN I ASKED HOW MUCH THE MAN SAID $500.00 THATS WHAT IT COST ME TO HAVE IT PAINTED. I FIGURED THAT I COULDN'T ARGUE WITH THAT. YOU'LL BE JUST FINE. DONN

You do indeed have a mid year 53'

And that's a decent price for a non-stuck parts tractor.. so is the hauling fee.

If you have the engine spinning freely, and the trans and diffy cleaned out.. You are about 100$ away from a 'startup' test.

A tuneup kit with al-437 or equiv plugs.. a new cap, rotor, coil, points, plug wires, battery, 6qts oil and a filter element.

The coil may not even be needed.. oild one may be fine.

We want pics and info as you go about it!

Again.. like the others said.. 650 aint much... I paid 480$ to have a tube and tire mounted on my NAA.. ( big 16.9x24 turf tire.. )

A couple of items to keep in mind. Water will freeze even in the trans and rear axle. Check all trans and axle bearings for rust. The original square NAA vane pump was often replaced with the newer roundish piston pump from the 1955 to 1964 600/800/900 series. 1953/54 NAA had an option for a push-pull one way remote hydraulic valve control which was mounted the top cover below the seat.

Sounds like you bought a pair of tires and got a tractor thrown in for free. Can't complain about that!

Sounds like a good price to me. You have a good tractor at a great price. Easy to work on and parts are resonable. Let me know how its goes. Craig

Even if you have to completely overhaul the motor, you are off to a low-cost start. The water in the transmission and hydrualic system is most likely a long-time accumulation of condensation. Wonder if your pump works? I bought a "pretty" Jubilee for $3200; then bought it again as I renewed it from the radiator back to the seal on the PTO. Good luck!

$650 is less than a Jubilee parts tractor would cost down in Texas - I'd say you done good! I like getting them rough, so I can fix them up. I enjoyed fixing up my old 48 8N so much I had to go out and get a run down 52 8N when my 48 "restoration" was almost complete. Now that my 52 is nearing completion, I want another.

Good luck,
Dan

I think you did OK. At least this way you will know the condition as you rebuild it. I recall a few posts here where someone paid 2, 3, 4, times as much as you did for a running tractor only to get it home and find out it needs a full engine rebuild or some other extremely pricey repair. It won't be as bad as you think. It will make you feel better when I post "The 9N Nightmare" at some point in the near future when I finally get my second tractor delivered. I don't want to post until the whole ordeal is over. Should be in the next two weeks or so. Where in GA are you?Congrats on the new addition. Eric

Hi Rick, Glad to hear you purchased another tractor. We always seem to second guess our investemnts when purchasing these old tractors. That's the name of the game, once you start working on the machine after a few day's you start to think you made a good decision. I purchased a /47 , 8n about five years ago and just this past winter changed the transmission, was not all that bad a project. The tractor has cost more than what I can get back out of it,would not part with it.Met a lot of nice people since getting involved with these old tractors. Cheers, Murray
