Update on Jubilee

I did a compression check on my Jubilee project today and got some fairly low numbers. On # 4- 50 dry/60 wet, #3 – 45 dry/60 wet, #2 – 75 dry/85 wet, #1 60 dry/75 wet. The rings may be stuck. The engine spun over well with no noises. I did hear an occasional clanking sound in the trans while in neutral and cranking over.

I may try the Marvel Mystery oil trick and try another compression test in a week or so.

I plan on getting a shop manual for the Jubilee but in the meantime, I was wondering if the 4 speed trans on the Jubilee is the same as the 4 speed on the 8N. I plan on splitting the tractor and investigating the clanking noise in the trans.

I got the sheet metal off and disassembled. It has a lot of surface rust and a few small holes rusted through on the lower edges but it is restorable (I have seen worse). It still has the original Golden Jubilee emblem on the front and the grill is in good condition with the exception of a square cutout in the bottom where it apparently had a FEL pump at one time.

The carb was really gummed up (will try a rebuild kit) but the gas tank is in reasonably good condition considering it has sat for a few years (maybe more). The manifold had a crack near the exhaust port but I brazed that up today. The tractor has apparently been converted to 12 volts because it has a GM alternator on it. I plan on rewiring it anyway.

I may be crazy but tinkering with this old Ford seems to be a good stress reliever.

Best regards,

Rick H. Ga.

Congratulations on your Jube. I picked up a 54 NAA this spring and have had fun and learned a lot but getting it back to good running condition.(It ran ok, but previous owners had neglected her badly). Before you split the tractor, take the shifter cover off. You can see your gears from there and may save yourself some trouble. The MPC is a great investment. The I&T FO-19 manual is a little sparser than the FO-4, but still a useful tool. There's a good crew of NAA owners around here willing to help with your questions. Later. Steve NAA 111443.

Sounds like you're have a ball, Rick. I'd like to find a '53 or '54 to play with, too, but I've got too many toys to play with already. Maybe after I get a few of the others put back together the little woman wouldn't notice if another one showed up. Yeah, right. At any rate, for the most part, the NAA tranny is the same as the 8N unit. The shifter is the same and so are the input shaft, gears, and most of the rest. However, the case, mainshaft, and countershaft are all different. Getcha a parts catalog for the '39 - '53 tractors and it will be easy to identify exactly what is different or interchangeable. Have fun.
