I am finaly starting to put the left trumpet and wheel back together on my 52 8N and I have run into several areas that I need help on.

The first is the brake drum (1126) that I got new has only two holes for the flat head screws while the old drum had four. Now what do I do?

The second has to do with the metal shims (4229) There were four that came off and they all were in the same place. Looking at the I & T manual fig. 4A2 it shows the shims in two places. One place is in front of the brake end of the trumpet and the other is in front of the shield (2255). I can't remember but I belive they came off the inside of the cup (4222). I think the picture says the same but I want to be sure. It is hard getting old!! :-). Also I have read some posts about putting Blue silicone between each of the four shims. Is this correct? It seems it would make them too thick?

The last thing for now is the retainer assy (4248). The new one I got has the gasket and seal built in I beleive. The old one has a twice as thick gasket as the new one. It this correct? The new one has a thinner rubber gasket. Will this work and do I put some oil or grease on when putting it back on?

Well that is all I can absorb for now.
Thanks,

Alex

I can only help with a little of this.. the 2 screws vs 4.. think of them as locator screws.. and they don't do much once the big honking lugnuts are torqued down anyway... 2 is fine..

Alex..... ...the brakedrum screws are really for assembly line usage, keeps the drum on the tractor until the rearrims get installed with 8 lugnuts. none works just as well as 2 or 4. Puttin yer 2 and donnna worry.

Metal shims came in 3 different thickness. Don't confuse shims with paper gaskets (thinner) which look the same and are mis-numbered the same shim partnumber. Now adays, they tell you to use the paper gaskets as shims as they'll also tell you that metal shims are NLA (they lie).

Some people are so paronoid about leaking oil out the trumpet seals muckin'up their new brakeshoes, that they go around RTV'n every surface to prevent oil from leaking out the shims. You can iff'n ya wants to but remember to really squeeze that shim-pak so you gittchur bearing clearances right.

Remember, bearing clearances, too loose is better than too tight, but just right is bestest of all.

The new retainer seal assy, check it carefully, The seal needs to be "off-set" just a tad so it centers things up. I had some seals that were flush and I couldn't make things line-up. I always lube my seals with greese to protect them during installation.

One other last hint, wipe yer BIG trumpet paper gasket with warm water to allow it to stretch to fit over the diffy studs..... ...Dell

Jerry..... .my local now outta business Ford Tractor dealer parts had the metal shims. (maybe they were NOS left-overs?) As I said....."Metal shims came in 3 different thickness. Don't confuse shims with paper gaskets (thinner) which look the same and are mis-numbered the same shim partnumber. Now adays, they tell you to use the paper gaskets as shims as they'll also tell you that metal shims are NLA (they lie)"..... .maybe not? The paper gaskets will work at about 0.010" thickness. Gitt extras, 50c cheap..... ...Dell

I bought all 3 sizes of the metal shims at the most local to me FNH. Off the shelf even. Leftovers from the olden days? Package didn't have much dust on it.
