Sherman Gearing Question

Guys, I'll post a more succinct message here in one last attempt to get some additional information. If you go to Parts & Pieces and look at "8N Sherman #2" picture, you'll see the bottom gear rail. For every full rotation of the 18 tooth bottom gear (that contacts the output shaft gear), the output spline that goes into the clutch has to turn 1.5 turns. Doesn't this reduce the engine rotation to the trans? What am I missing. All indications are that this is a step-up trans (cable) but this fact has me baffled. Thanks for any insight.

From looking at your picture:

A) if the shaft that is missing goes into the transmission to turn the tranny gears, then you have a step-down Sherman

B) if the missing shaft slides into the clutch, then you have a step-up Sherman.

Yes, the shaft that is missing goes into the tranny. Does seem like a step down but the cable has me doubting. I was wondering if the output shaft (the gear that goes into the tranny) somehow factored into the gear increase/reduction, however, I don't see how.
