Hi All,

I hope you all don’t mind me sharing my progress on my 53 Jubilee project. I believe I found the clanking problem in the transmission. It looks like I’m going to need a third gear on the main shaft and a countershaft. I haven’t got a FO-19 manual yet but I have an FO-4 and if the 8N and NAA 4-speed transmissions are pretty much about the same I have some gear teeth missing from the third gear on the main-shaft and one missing on the gear just underneath the third gear which I believe are the gears made onto the counter-shaft. I almost have the engine ready to remove so I can disassemble the trans. I have almost completely disassembled the entire tractor. I figure if I’m going to restore this Golden Jubilee I might as well do it right. I wish I had a pressure washer/sandblaster outfit like Willie N. I have a lot of old rust and crud to remove.

I’ve been on vacation from work the last week and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. I still think the Jubilee is restorable. I plan on taking my time and not getting in a hurry. If I can ever get it in as good a shape as my 49 8N I’ll be happy; if not I can say I had fun anyway.

Rick - Take a look at your manual for me before you order gears. I will bet it is the second gear and counter shaft gears that have teeth missing. I may be wrong but the second gear in these transmission are famous for going out. I jus did mine if you have questions.

Thanks Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the comments. The gear with teeth broken on the mainshaft is the second big gear from the rear of the trans housing. It is the one just in front of the coupler and fork. The broken gear on the counter shaft is directly under the broken gear on the mainshaft.

I have read that the second gear is known for failing but I believe the FO-4 manual identified the broken gear as 3rd gear (#5 in FO-4 or part #7102). I am not 100% sure which is the broken gear on the countershaft but it is the gear directly under the broken gear on the mainshaft.

I will know more when I get it dissambled. thanks.

The 8N and NAA transmissions are mostly the same but the NAA has a couple of gears and shafts that are slightly different than the 8N. I've got a ratty old Jub (good trans) that I plan to part out sometime next month. If you haven't located the used parts you need by then I can probably fix you up.

Rick,
I'm doing some leak repair on mine. Got a small sand blaster and a pressure washer from Harbor Fright. (I calls it like I sees it). Course you still need a compressor for the sand blaster. I'm also using Zane's lye and cornstarch stripper recipe and electrolysis. Link below is for "washing soda" if you can't find it locally. On t'other hand, I used both baking soda and lye at three level tablespoons per gallon of water and I feel the lye does the best for electrolysis. Showed a catalog sale ad for the sandblaster to the local HF and they gave me the same price. The problem I have is my compressor is too small plus I don't have a good way to save the blast medium. So I'm slow and sloppy. The MPC says the trannies are the same for 8N and NAA. There is a note that cases marked HX have helical gears while non-HX have spur gears. Only applies to certain parts.

Sounds like true fun to me. And you're making good progress. I can't wait to get elbow deep in grease from my upcoming project. I enjoy you sharing your progress. If I'm not learning from it I'm being inspired by it. Keep going and keep posting. Eric
