I found three Shermans at a salvage yard. 1 was a standard grey step-up and two were red, cable operated step-downs!!! In all my research into these Shermans, I was told that the step-downs didn't have cables and they were painted a copper/bronze color. Here are some pics to help the next person trying to figure out what they have.

BTW: If anyone has an output shaft with 28 teeth, please contact me. One of the step-downs was missing its output shaft.

Been looking for an output shaft (to the transmission) for an overdrive as well. If anybody has any leads, please email me.

I emailed Marvin about his combination output shaft and he reports it will not fit the step-up or step-down units. I have not taken my step-down ouput shaft apart yet to take measurements but it seems likely that the combo shaft would be different since it would need to accommodate three gears (normal, hi, low) instead of the two present on the step-up and step-down models (normal, hi or low).

In my search for a step-down output shaft, I'll keep an eye out for a step-up and report any finds.

Here is a closer view of the bottom gears of the step-up on the right and the step-down on the left. You can barely see the 18T gear poking out on the step-down (left) versus the larger step-up gear (28T) on the right.

Step-Downs do come with cable pulls! I've got two to prove it... They also come in red...

Output shafts - One on the left is step-up and the one on the right is step-down.

Phil..... .that is INDEED INTERESTING. Any other identification on yer red-boxes like lable plates? Is one of those useable? I assume you've been sharing your discovery with John Smith, haven't you? Great research, thanks for sharing..... ..Dell

Dell - Yes, I had been speaking to John before I found the last two (trying to figure out if I had a step-down or not). Today, I shot him an email offering to provide any detailed photos he'd like of the step-downs for his web site. He has been very helpful. I also contacted Marvin Baumann and I also found a guy in TX who claims to have all the parts from every Sherman!

No labeling or plates and no Sherman Co. painting like the Step-up. The casting numbers are the same on all three and the inards are all the same. One of the step-downs doesn't have a ball detent for the pull cable and one does. One of the step-downs has the eye in the nose casting for a lever but had the cable???? I'll probably use this housing and fabricate a lever.

The step-up is fully functional as is one of the step-downs. I'll definitely have one of the step-downs in my tractor before summer's end. One of the step-downs is missing the output shaft but otherwise in good working order. I spent a good part of today figuring out how these things work and comparing them against each other. Lots of subtle differences. One great thing I discovered is that the output shaft from the step-up is exactly the same as the step-down, except for the main gear. The step-down has the larger 28T gear. If I can find a step-up output shaft AND find a 28T gear, I'll have two working step-downs. Then the tough decision, do I keep the second as a spare or for parts or do I sell it... High class problems...

With my luck today I should have also played the lottery...
