Randy..... ..first rule of mooving parts, theys gotta be LUBRICATED.

Your 8N has the "secret" lube hole behind the bolt that holds the battery tray on the right side under yer oilpressure gauge. I gitta plastic squeezem tube with nipple of outboard motor lower unit heavy oil and fill'em up. You doubt? make a wire "J-hook" probe and find the secret fill'em-up.

Then jack yer tractor frontend up and swing yer steering wheel, eazy or stiff? go from there. But I really don't think its yer bearings. Bad bearings are usually slopppy..... ....Dell

Dell, I have oiled my steering box through removing the steering wheel bolt and pouring 90W oil down the tube. Is this something else I need to lube, or does pouring oil down the tube take care of everything? I have a 49'. Also, when I am making a sharp left turn, the steering sometimes gets hung up and I have to slow the tractor down (running in 2nd) and really push to straighten out the wheels. there is about 4" of slop in the steering wheel - meaning i can turn the wheel 4" without the tires moving. Thanks, Doug.

Doug..... ...inspite of various pictures, yer hollow steering wheel shaft is a DEADEND and doesn't lube 'nuttin'. Do the "J-hook" check like I told you. Some early 8N had a hidden, hard to find, removable bolt in the steering wheel tube behind the dashpanel that your supposed to beable to dribble heavy gearbox oil down to yer gearbox bearings. I've never found it.

Iff'n yer haffin' that much problems with yer steering, yer probably lookin' atta re-build before it gittz too bad an ya runn innta sumptin. Gittout yer I&T FO-4 manual..... ..respectfully, Dell

If it's that hard to steer.. sounds like you have a top or bottom bearing going.

You may be able to adjust a little bit of slack out of that old style box by adjusting the sector covers... Rotate them one bolt hole at a time to see if they get tighter at any point.
