I am trying to brush hog a field with the 9n tractor. After 2 passes it begins to buck and act like it is overheating. I flushed the radiator, drained the coolant and put in new antifreeze and water, replaced the water pump, cleaned the radiator fins, put on a new radiator cap and replaced the oil filter. When I took it out to try again, I had the same results.

Starts great, runs fine, works well for the first two passes then bucks (the only way I can get it to stay running is by pulling out the choke) and seems to overheat and has to be cooled down to work again.

If I wait for 10 minutes it is fine again and ready to go for another two passes and the same results.

Anyone have any other ideas I can try? I am stumped.

Do the standard check stuff.

Drain carb into a glass jar.. let it pee for a while.. if the stream tapers off you have a fuel restriction.

Do a voltage check at the top of the coil.. should be 3 volts or so.. higher than 3.5 can cause problems. Clean contacts at the switch and the resistor.

When you add water to the radiator.. only add enough to cover the core.. the rest of the area is expansion space.

All the plugs look good? Wires the copper core kind?

From what you're describing it sounds like a clogged fuel line or filter. The carb has about enough gas to run 5 or 10 minutes depending on how much is seeping in. After it sets a spell the carb fills up again and you are ready to go. My dad used to disconnect the line and blow air back through the tank to clean it out (for a while at least). Hope this helps..

Dave, You were on the mark. Your advice was excellent. I disconnected the fuel line, blew air into the tank. Removed the fuel filter and ran gas through the carburetor. I also added Lead to the fuel mixture since I am using unleaded fuel.

The tractor ran great, did not die in 10 minutes. Thanks for the advice.

Try this posting by Dell WA yesterday. It may solve your problem. There are 4 common runtime issues. 1) runs for about 1 minute and quits, bad condenser; not yer stated problem
2) runs for about 5 minutes and quits, clogged fuel filters; not yer stated problem
3) runs for about 1 hr and quits, cures itself overnite, BAD ignition coil; NOT yer stated problem
4) runs for about 15 minutes and quits; sound like yer stated problem?

Gunked up ignition switch gutts. You doubt? next time it quits, jumper the ignition switch wires with a pre-made wire with alligator clippies. Unfortunately, N-Ignition switches are not as robust as we'd like 'em to be..... ....Dell, self-appointed sparkie-meister
