I have been looking for a decent old 3 point sickle bar mower, and a old style ground driven rake to use for haying (small areas).
I figure I can cut and rake then have a friend with the bailer come in for a quick round to bale.
It is very hard to find anyone around these parts that will do small acreages
Any input as to what those would run in your area?
They seem awfully high around here.

I paid $300.00 for my Massey Ferguson 3 pt sickle mower. I like it, because it has no pitman stick, but a gearbox. The blade will cut in the upright position also.

I have a John Deere #9 sickle mower. It mounts on the 3 point hitch and it works well. I use it for what you are describing. It was free to me because my aunt gave it to me. I've seen them for about $150. I have a line on a complete one in Utah that has been stored in a barn unused for the last several years. There is also a guy in town that has two Ford 501 sickle mowers for sale, a red one (early) and a blue one (later). Last time I asked him the price he still wanted about $750 for them. That was a couple of years ago. Maybe he's more humble now.

For a rake I used to have Ford 503 pto 3 point rake, but it was pretty much worn out when I got it. It was a throw-in when I bought the tractor. After that I used a ground driven MF 36 rake. I didn't like it as well because of my confined spaces. My field is really small. I prefer the 3 point pto rakes ability to be picked up and set back down in another place (especially in corners, etc). The pull behind rake seemed to be more suited to long straight stretches. I now have a Ferguson DE-O-25 3 point pto rake. It does a good job, but it's very old and parts are becoming tough to find. The rake cost me $175 at an auction and I had to spend another $100 to build a new pto driveshaft and some new tines (still available at my MF dealer...same tines as the MF36 and MF25 rakes).

I enjoy baling when the baler works, but I have 2 old balers (one was given to me as a project) and neither one is very dependable. That makes it not fun. I find that others who have small balers and could come bale my hay are usually way too busy at haying time to come bale mine.

Fellah was offering a New Holland 7" 451 for $350 and was willing to discuss $250 when I came out to look. Haven't made it out yet. Next time I'm going to counter for $150. Don't really need it anyway.

Would the 451 work on my 2N? I need to cut ditches and am looking for a pitmanless mower. If it is complete and would work, I'd be will to buy from him/you if price was right.

I guess it would work. I looked at it on the New Holland website. It's the current model from what I can tell so if you have questions you call your New Holland dealer and talk to the impliment salesman. He should be able to tell you what about it and your 2N.
Lot of the guys are going to haybines and don't need their mower; or so I understand. You might ask your dealer about used or take out an ad in the paper. You're a ways from Kansas. We might be able to work something if you want.
Good luck with it.

Rob, New Holland sais it will work but that it will stop every time I put in the clutch. No one has a used one around here. Do you know if it works and all of the parts would come with it? Thanks for your help.

3pt sickle bar mowers always command high prices. Rakes shouldn't be all that high and you can also get them in PTO driven varieties. There's a guy that's been advertising a wheel type rake for quite a while with no takers. Look under "Photo Ads" and search for "rake".
