My 52'8N runs extremely rough (skips and misses) under a load (disking) for the first 15-20 min. after a cold start. After 15-20 min. it runs great. Any suggestions on where I should start to fix this problem?

One More suggestion! I did all of the things mentioned in the responses..Still had some missing etc. Finally replaced the bronze distributor shaft bushing on my 52 side mount. That made more improvement than abything else!

Ken..... ..the dis. on my NAA is in need of repair. The tractor still running strong but, the shaft has side to side movement and the oil tube is broken. I hope when this repair is completed the tractor will run stronger. Where did you get repair parts for your distributor. I have search this site and have asked the parts places here in town with no luck. Have almost decided to just get new or rebuilt distributor. From your experience, what do you suggest. How difficult was the repair. Am concerned that I will not have all the repair pieces on hand to get the tractor running and will have to wait on them until the grass get too tall that a 34hp tractor can’t bush-hog it..... ...thanks..... .E. Thanks for the ideas, could be the plug wires, I've had the tractor for +-35yrs and as far as I can remember they haven't been replaced, did change the plugs about 3yrs ago. Thanks again.

SBK..... ...it ain'chur carb, cold carb warms up in about 1 minute.

Its yer sparkies. Most likely yer sparkie wires. You doubt? Go and starter on DARK-NITE and watch the blue sparkies dance on the sparkie wires. Replace 'em with real copper-core NEW insulation sparkie wires. ($10 cheap)

Then change yer sparkies to NEW hotter plugs, AL-437 is recommended..... ....Dell, the self-appointed sparkie-meister

Hey Dell - Just curious.

Why would it run better after 15-20 minutes? Wouldn't the wires still be bad?

Larry..... ..ionization....various gaps and most likely internally broken carbon-core sparkie wire. Carbon-core is like glass or ceramic and it cracks but the sparkie will jump the gap and ionize the gasses between the gap and the ionization will allow eazier passage of the sparkie to the plug for its real purpose of life, IGNITION of gasoline.

As I said, new COPPER sparkie wires and new sparkplugs. ($20 cheap)..... .Dell

It's possible it is not fireing on all cylinders.

Check plugs, wires, and cap and rotor. Check fuel flow for the heck of it.. plus air flow.

Mine does the same thing. I've already rebuilt the gov., the carb., new points/condensor/cap/rotor/plugs and wires. Any other ideas? I just figured that was the way she was. (It is a real tired engine).

David..... ...ya tried all the eazy fixxes and it didn't fix yer problem of ruff runnin', and then you admit to a "tired engine". Well guess what??? Tired engines are hard to start and are ruff runnin'. Don't be so d*** cheap, engine rebuild kits less than $500..... ...respectfully, Dell

Dell,
I'm not saying I don't know it needs a rebuild, I'm merely wondering why mine smooths out after 15-20 minutes if the engine is as bad as you're implying, and I have done all of the fixes you say cause the problem. I can't read your mind to figure out your logic, just trying to make some sense out of it.

David..... ...I can only make suggestions based upon what is reported. I will be the first to admit that I don't know everything (SHOCK!!!)

Iff'n ya really want to further investigate yer gitts better runnin' after 15 minutes. Do a compression test on cold engine, then on hot engine, you could have some sticking valves and rings that unstick with some warmth and improve yer compression.

And becertain that your sparkie wires are real copper-core ...NOT... modern anti-radiostatic carbon-core sparkie wire..... ...respectfully, Dell

Dell,
I know you don't know everything-just about everything about though in regards to 8ns! (Thankfully for the rest of us!) I didn't think of comparing cold/hot compression readings. I'll try that. I'm hoping to rebuild the engine this winter anyways. The plugs wires are copper core, I already learned that from you before I bought them. Thanks for all your advice.
David
