There seems to be a notion that gearboxes are indestuctable whatever you put in them. Let me clear the air with an experience I had. It was with a 1988 Ford E-150 van. I had ordered it with a five speed (Madza, stick shift) from the factory. The specs called for ATF. I resisted and put what I thought was stronger stuff, You know, Better lube for the gears. Don't recall what I put into it now, but it was name brand gear oil. Some months later, when the transmission disassembled itself at about 60K miles, I couldn't come up with any better reason than the oil I used. After a $900 rebuild, I decided it might be best to listen to the manufacturer's suggestions. I had no trouble with it from there on out till I sold it three years ago, full of ATF and 120 K miles. I have approx. 300,000 on my 1980 E-150.

Believe it or knot, it still has the same lubricant in the C-6 transmission that it came with from the factory. Never had a problem yet. I check the level now and then. Am I supposed to change it for some reason?
(GRIN) Nice to hear from YA. John,PA

Hey John! Good to hear from you! A C-6 is a slushbox (automatic) or am I wrong? Mine was the 5 speed Mazda standard shift that Fomoco used in it's light trucks. The only thing wrong with that truck was it's tranny. Rich
P.S.
maybe I'll stop in to see you some time. I'm driving out to Carlyle to get on 81 south bound for my new place in Virginia.

Please give me some lead time, though, that you are coming my way. I just put together a deal with a 3rd generation farmer for a new cold storage system. So, like always, I have to finish his job "yesterday" if you know what I mean. trouble is, he has to figger on how to pay for it before I have to put a "lein" on his property.

Regards, John,PA
