I rebuilt the carb on my 8N and I have a problem! The book says adjust idle needle to full close and open 1 turn, same for the other one. The problem is when I turn the idle needle all the way untill it is seated the tractor will not stall out! And tractor will not pull under heavy load without holding choke 1/2 closed. What's up with this?

Thank you just what I was looking for. I haven't rebuilt a carberator in 35 years, but here's my chance.

Remember that the idle needle is backwards of the main needle.. and also.. there is an idle rpm stop screw on the back side of the carb.

Are you saying that the tractor stalls out under load after the rebuild? Did you accidentally swap the jets.. small one on the power side?

Did you get the gaskets correct? a vacume leak will lean out a mix fast..

The jets are possible I will look and see, and it doesn't stall out it loses power and if I close the choke it will run better

Choke enriches the mix.. (therefore might be a vacume leak.. as vacume leaks lean out the mix...)

Could be carb halves.. carb to manifold.. or manifold to block..

John..... ...ya gotta problem, don't be afraid to start a new question, instead of hiding it inside someone elses question even though your question is the same. And don't be afraid to use enuff words to describe your problem, we don't charge extra and it may even be helpful for diagnostic purposes.

Everybody seems to mis-understand carburator adjustment. Each engine/carburator is just slightly different but the procedure is the same. Thats why they have those handy dandy tweek'ems, that everybody is just itching to tweek whenever they have an engine running problem. And most of the time, the engine running problem IS NOT a carb problem but is a SPARKIE problem. And carbs just don't SUDDENLY get outta adjustment (unless someones been tweekin').

Heres how I adjust the N-Ford M/S carb. Ford sez to adjust BOTH the downpointing MAINjet and the sidepointing IDLEjet to 1-turn as a starting point. I adjust the downpointing MAINjet to 1-1/2 turns and LEAVITT!!!

I then adjust the sidepointing IDLEjet for maximum rpms, NOT smoothest running, MAX rpms, understand? Then I goose the throttle and iff'n it takes up rpms smoothly, its good, iff'n it stumbles, 1/8 turn more enrichment.

Note: yer N-Ford idle spec is a SLOOOoooww 400rpms and is set by the behind the carb throttle setscrew. Remember: the IDLEmixture is BASSACKWARDS, out for lean, IN for ENRICH. My idlemix usually ends up about 3/8 turn..... ...HTH, Dell
