I have an 8n that I just put a new clutch in. On the first start the starter spun and engaged the teeth in the flywheel. The motor did not spin. (as if the starter had no power) Now the starter is stuck in the teeth) I split the tractor again thinking i would see a way to get it free. It wont budge. I can spin the motor by hand the teeth are not jamed.. What next?

I had one stick once my self. I loosened the starter mounting bolts and drove a WOOD chisel between the starter and the tractor. It worked like a champ. One thing I don't understand, if the bendix is hung up on the ring gear I would think it would have come free when you rotated the engine? One thing to check is your battery cable connections. Make sure everyting is bright and tight on both ends. Good luck

Thanx guys on the good advice. I did get it free. Im a bit embarrased to tell you what happened but i will anyway.. First i put the tractor halves together before installing the starter.. I should have done this first a saved mself some time. As I was having trouble getting the starter in the hole i disambles the starter drive to move the bendix away from the flywheel. While putting the drive back together i left out the wave washers and spacers. This let the bendix jam too far into the flywheel ring jamming the starter. Thought I could still turn the flywheel freely as the pressure was then off the starter drive.. I guess the biggest mistake was pushing to get the project completed quickly.. All I really needed to do was step back, take a break and clean up the bench. When things start kicking your rear its best to walk away for a bit and take a fresh look.. Thanx again for the help.

I'm going on a hunch here, but it could be one of two things:

1) Worn out starter. Especially with rebuilt engines, the engine is so tight that the starter doesn't have enough "juice" to turn the engine over until it gets broken in. May be time for a starter rebuild.

2) Bad solenoid. If the solenoid is going bad on you, it won't let enough juice get to the starter motor and so it won't turn the engine over. Try jumping it with 12V right to the frame and the copper starter lug. If that spins it, it's probably your solenoid going out on you.

Don't worry about trying to get the starter bendix out of the flywheel ring gear before you crank it. Once the engine spins or coughs once, it'll kick the bendix out of gear. That's just how the old style bendix works.
