My dogs recently tore out the wiring on my 9N 12 volt conversion. I rewired the whole thing from a schematic I got on line. It starts and runs great, but won't shut down when I turn the key off. It'll crank but not start with the key off, so the key needs to be on to get spark on starting. After it's running, though, the key won't shut the thing off. Help!

Did ya swap p1 and p2 during the rewire?

Did it work before the dog helped?

If so.. check whatever method you are using to isolate the p1 excite line from the ignition.. that's where the problem most likely is.

She ran great before the dogs helped. (They were trying to get at a ground squirrel.)

Thanks, I'll check the P1 and P2.

The excitation wire on your alternator needs to be open when you cut off the ignition. Some people solve this problem with a diode, lamp, or resistor in line with the excitation wire. I have found that a generic auto ignition switch works well when you put the excitation wire on the ACC terminal of the switch. I think the switch is a more positive solution.

Good Luck

BILL IS RIGHT- YOUR ALT IS KEEPING THE TRACTOR RUNNING. I WOULD PUT A 194 BULB IN SERIES WITH THAT ALT EXCITATION WIRE. YOU CAN USE A SEPARATE SW LIKE WAS SUGGESTED, BUT THEN YOU HAVE TO REMEBER TO TURN IT ON AND OFF. ALSO I HAVE NOTICED THAT WITH A SW WHEN YOU LOAD DOWN THE ENGINE AND THE RPM DROPS- THE EXCITATION STOPS AND YOU HAVE TO TURN THE SW ON AND OFF AGAIN. THE 194 LAMP KEEPS THE ALT EXCITATION GOING JUST ABOUT ALL OF THE TIME. YOU DO HAVE TO REV UP THE ENGINE TO GET THE EXCITION STARTED WITH THE 194 BULB. GOOD LUCK

Well, considering that the standard N ignition switch is a notorious problem anyway, the switch route might not be a bad idea, but the real question is, if it worked before, what do you already have so you won't have to spend money on anything but rifle shells... (shoot the dog) On my first 12v. conversion (a '54 international truck), I used a really elegant solution- a charge relay. My mind could not comprehend that a simple light bulb would provide enough resistance to isolate the alternator from the ignition. When I did my N, I used a truck marker light I mounted on the dash which also reminds me to turn the key off when I run out of gas. I like the light, I don't know how many times it's saved my butt; walking away, I see that alternator light glowing on the dash.

I can't believe how quickly this board came up with suggestions! Yeah, I turn off the gas and wait.

Another friend has suggested a faulty switch. I'll check the P1/P2 wiring, check the switch out, and install a light as a last resort.

Thanks,
Naf
