Difference between a 9n and a 8n PTO shaft

Our PTO shaft on our 9n looks like the 8n PTO shaft in the IT service manual. Is there a difference between the two shafts? Is the 9n shaft longer than the 8n shaft or does the bearing retainer sit in a different position on the output shaft?

While all of the 9N/2N/8N PTO shafts are the same length and are physically interchangeable, the early 9N's had a mechanic's nightmare for a seal arrangement at the housing. It had a spring and thrust washers and all kinds of other wonderful garbage. The seal and bearing were much improved and simplified on the later units. This may be the difference you are seeing. All new replacements for all models are of the later type.

When engaging PTO on our 9N, a terrible grinding noise would follow. Then PTO lost all power. Wouldn't turn driveshaft on finish mower or brush hog. You could stop the PTO from spinning with your foot. Hydraulics worked ok. We checked for broken PTO shaft, shift link, and counter shaft gears. All looked ok. Any ideas?

You've got some contradictory symptoms there. If the PTO shaft can be stopped with your foot but you are SURE your hydraulics are OK even with an implement on, I'd say that the PTO shaft is broken between the pump and the outside of the tractor. How have you been investigating the problem? Strictly by visual inspection through the inspection covers or did you actualy pull the shaft? There really isn't much to it. The shaft, transmission countershaft, and a shift sleeve in between are it. It's got to be one of the three.

We did pull the shaft out and it looked fine. Thats what our problem is we don't know what it is. Well I guess we will continue to investigate the problem. Thanks for your help.

Ryan, if you've had the shaft out and it was in good shape including the splines, then I'd say your PTO shift sleeve has got the splines chewed out of it where it engages with the countershaft. It happens - more often than you'd think. I've got a 640 torn down right now for the same thing. The bad news is that you've gotta split the tractor behind the transmission to get to it. It's really not a bad job at all. Pull the left hand inspection cover/PTO shifter off, drain the oil at all three drain plugs, disconnect the clutch linkage rod, and pul the bolts out. Support each half on a floor jack and gently roll it apart. Two reasonably handy guys can have one apart right there in half an hour. Once you've got her split, you'll be staring at the PTO shifter hanging off the back of the tranny. Four more bolts and you'll have your answer. Good luck!
