Folks, need your opinions.
In replacing cylinder liners in a '51 8n, ( .040 steel liners,) I discovered a tiny crack in the lip of the new liner in #1 cylinder. The crack does not extend into the cylinder wall.
What is probability that this won't cause any problem?
What potential problems could it cause?
Thanks, Roy

RB-

Sory, but you need to replace the sleeve. it will continue to split and eventually cause broken rings or even a seized piston. DO NOT drill a hole at the base of the crack - it will not prevent further deterioration.

RB,

Cracks always have the potential to be problems. I would take the liner back for a new one. As the motor heats and cools this will put stress on the crack that will tend to make it expand. At the very least I would stop drill the crack. To do this you take a tiny drill bit and drill a hole at the end of the crack. This will help it not to crack any further but it's noo guarentee.
