N need a thermostat?

Guys talk about leaving out the thermostat out but I'm certain Ford didn't put any unnecesary parts on his tractor. Leaving out the thermostat is a bad idea that limits performance and robs hours from the life of the engine.

The engine must be at a constant operating temperature to properly adjust the carburator for peak performance. A constant operating temperature is maintained by the thermostat. No thermostat and the operating temperature varies away from peak performance depending on the the season and load.

A high, constant operating temperature boils away moisture and also prevents the accumulation of harmful combustion by-products in the crankcase and oil. Also, a good, clean breather cap will help keep the crankcase dry.

The engine needs a thermostat to provide consistant peak performance and the thermostat and breather cap helps prolong the life of the engine.

Every N I have seen without a thermostat had lower compression cascading back to the dash. For example, my 48 8N had no thermostat and had a compression of 110/98/95/85. the cooler water from the radiator helped the front cylinder closest to the radiator, but hurt the other cylinders progressively worse as it moved away from the radiator. I would much rather have a solid compression of 95 across all cylinders than the above example.

Good luck,
Dan

I wondered about that. You know they figured all the clearances and sizes based on the normal operating temperature. Makes sense to keep the engine at a uniform temp.

Right on, Rob. Running without a thermostat is one of the best ways to reduce performance and shorten engine life.

Hey George! That sounds like a 'worse way' to ME.

Just kidding, I know what you mean. I knew about the moisture and all forever but it just dawned on me about the carb adjustment. I was going over how to adjust the carb and I finally saw it.

Thanks.
