I am in the process of replacing the spider and
gears and both side gears in my 52 N the spider gears were pretty well ground up I pulled the 3 drain plug and drained the fluid out
whats the best way to make sure I get all 3 section cleaned good.
what are the chances that grinding got up into the tranny?
Help

Been there.

Look at all the bearings and races in there too. Chances are that the suspended metal particles caused some more damage.

I spent a few hours with a parts cleaning brush and a 5 gallon can of kerosene and cleaned the compartments out by hand. Magnetic drain plugs are a great idea for the future but the metal should be cleaned out now. The transmission section is more difficult to clean and I ended up flushing it a few times to loosen up the stuff in the bottom of the case. One advantage of the construction of the N is that the inner configuration of the castings restrict free flow of the oil at it's lowest level, hence the reason for the 3 drains. What that means is when the metal particles settle to the bottom of the oil they are more likely to stay in each section and not migrate throughout. A great theory until the voulme of crud builds up to the point where the lowest crevices get filled up and now low isn't so low.

Take your time and get it all out. It's worth it.

I think you make a case for getting magnetic drain plugs. I believe I saw them on one of the ususal online parts houses.

Flush good with some diesel fuel or kerosene.

Seeing metal particles can make one scared and start think'n the absolute worse.

You will be ok with a good flush and refill.

Hope this helps. John,PA
