8N Starter Solenoid - Is it possible?

Well, I have determined that the starter solenoid is not an original 8N starter solenoid thanks to your description.

Previously, the tractor did not utilize the push button so I am wondering if it is possible that the starter solenoid is HOT activated versus ground activated?

If this is the case, would you suggest replacing it or would you just rewire it to accomodate a "hot" switch to the solenoid?

I wish I had thought of this last night when I was messing with the tractor but I didn't think of it until I was driving to work this morning.

Thanks again, I appreciate the support.

Rich

Rich..... ..there are several types of 4-terminal starter solenoids. Most take a switched volts to activate. Sometimes the 4th-terminal provides a by-passed volts to the ignition coil ballast resistor. Its hard to guess what kind of starter solenoid you have.

A real OEM 3-terminal tractor safety starter solenoid $10 (cheap) Mount it with the small center terminal against the engine so its hard to gittoo (don't ask)..... ....Dell

Jumper Cable across the solenoid?

A jumper cable across the solenoid should tell me if the solenoid is working, right?

I have never heard of a hot activated solenoid, but then again - I am not as knowledgable on that as many here on the board. If it was my tractor, I would get the correct solenoid ($8) and wire it up to the starter button as designed. This way, you can save your brain cells remembering how you rigged it up in the future - or at least save the next owner from the same confusion.

Good luck,
Dan

Hot activated means that(after swtiching on the ignition switch) depressing the start switch places voltage on the solenoid vs ground activated that has voltage applied by the ignition switch and is activated by the depressing the grounding (safety) switch.

Both types are used with the grounding system used into the early '60's. Later the opposite was used but still incorporated the safety function of having to have the tranny in N before it'd kick over. (At least my tractors are that way.)
