9N gear noise

I recently purchased a 1940 9N. Everything seems to work fine, but the gears seem to make a whining noise when going uphill or when the tractor is pulling hard. This being the first one of these tractors I have ever had, I am not sure if this is normal or not. I know the gears are spur cut, which tend to make them a little noisy anyway (like reverse on most manual transmissions), but I would just like to be sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Gears will make noise but I had a similar question and a previous post came back from Zane and his thought was that it may be transmission bearings. Seems that the noise will radiate through the rear of the trans and appear to be in the rear end. Since then I have just lived with it and convinced myself that it's not really that bad.

I noticed the noise after raplacing the pinion gear and the differential bearings. I know you are supposed to replace the ring and pinion as a set but I couldn't find one matched. In reality, the noise that I hear could have been there all along and I just didn't notice it. I had changed the gear oil from what was in there (smelled like GL5) when I got it to the suggested MC-134 lubricant. The thinner lube would have allowed things to get a little louder.

You may want to try an archive search.
