Ive never been able to start a gas engine with no compression to see how bad it smokes . I understand there is a lot of that whacky tabacky stuff in so . Cal . Just my opinion . ( I think Rick is pulling or leg ) .

The complete parts kit (sleeves, pistons, bearings, rings, valves, etc) is about $450 from TISCO. If you take the engine to the shop, you will probably save $100. If the crank needs to be turned, add the $100 back. Labor around here in VA will run $400-$500. So....in VA, figure $900-$1000. I'll be intrested to see what rebuilds cost elsewhere!

I used a fellow near me (Central IL) who specializes in restoring antique engines, and paid a premium for the work. Given the problems he found and corrected (that I would certainly have missed, not having the tools and equipment to mic everything out), I think it was probably worth it (but it's gonna really hurt the checkbook for a while!).

The machinework total was right at $1500... plus about $500 for the parts (ouch). About $400 of the machining cost was having him do the rebuild and paint the engine (it will be a few months before I reassemble the tractor and I didn't want it to start rusting again).

That doesn't include the next $500 I'm going to have to spend to clean, prep and paint the tractor (well, now that the engine is pristine, I HAVE to, right?)...

I'll still be out less than a used Kubota would have cost me... and having more fun, too!
