Hi,
I have noticed that my steering is very loose. I have to turn the wheel 3/4 of a revolution before the wheels will turn. Do I have to replace the entire steering box or is there something I can adjust on top of the box or steering shaft coming from the steering wheel?

I bought a '48 8N that had the same problem. Steering wheel would turn 3/4 of a revolution before turning wheels. Steering box had the bottom bearing and race completely chewed up. I put new bearings and races in both top and bottom of steering box. Works good now. Also replaced bushings in steering box. One way to check is to watch to see if your steering wheel raises and lowers when you turn it. That will tell if you have a bad bearing in steering box.

Do you have a operators manual or an I&T Fo-4 manual? The proceedure is listed in these places. These steering boxes are somewhat adjustable, but not a whole lot.

If you don't have a book, let us know and we can walk you through it.

Good luck,
Dan

Assuming you still have the early model box on that 8n.. you adjust that one by removing the sector side covers and rotating them a bolt hole at a time to see if they will tighten up.

Do the side that engages the steering worm first.. then the other side. FO-4 has great pics.

If it never tightens up.. you are out of adjustment.. and need to rebuild the box ( bushings and bearings/seals. Or drop in another box...

I rebuilt my late style box.. not a rocket science job.. but a fair amount of cussing involved..

Make sure you check all of the linkage for play. A loose draglink end, a loose tie rod end.. etc.. can magnify to quite a bit of slop at the steering wheel.. same for spindle bushings.. etc.
