My problem is 3 weeks ago I ran into a limb getting to close to a tree. The radiator spit out fluid all over the engine. I just replaced to radiator and tried to start it and it turned over but would not start. I have power to the coil but I don't have any power to the spark plug wires. My grandpa told me to stick a screwdriver in the sparkplug wire and turn over the engine and check and see if there is any spark. I did and there was no spark. He said there might be water in their so I took off the coil and distributer and open it up to check and see if there was any water. There was none but i cleaned it up anyway. I replaced it and still the same thing. I think I narrowed it down to the coil but I wanted another opinion on the matter. The other thing i noticed is I can turn over the engine without the key in the ignition. When I put the key in and turn it to the on postion then try to crank the tractor it just turns over the same. Also There is power to the coil only when the key is in the "on" postion. I learned the hard way and left the key on and burned out a coil "Black Tar". The tractor is 12 volts.

Thanks in advance..... ..

Just had the same problem, It was the condenser. But I would check for moisture in distribitor. Good Luck Ray

Adrian , you blew antifreeze all over the place , it wont dry up like water, things continue to short out, Im thinking a new set of points cond. dist. cap rotor will get you going, my grandpa had the same problem with his 55 chevy. ( hm that was a long time ago ) I turned 60 yesterday, happy birthday to me happy birthday to me , or is it happy birthday to you you belong in a zoo, oh well Im still hitting on all 8 cyls. Or in the case of most N owners only 4 . ( just making a joke guys, cool it ) .

Don't know how you are checking "power" at the coil? An old type voltmeter with the hand is what I like best. You say yor tractor is 12 volt, so it should be negative ground. Then the red lead goes on the coil and the black on any ground point. Turn the key on and crank it over and you should see the hand on your voltmeter pulsing from 12v (points open) to less than 6v (points closed). If no pulsing you either have something not making contact in the distributor or an open coil. If it stays low (less than 6v) then you have something shorted inside the distributor. A digital meter will work, but the readings bounce around and you just don't see the fluctation as well. Nice thing about a digital is that you don't have to worry about reversing leads as they read + and -.

The key and starter are ok the way you say it's working. Your Granddad told you right to check the spark like that.
I had a tractor that wouldn't start when it got wet on the distributor. Come to find out the bail over the coil was on wrong and the coil didn't set just exactly square on the distributor. I'm assuming you have a front-mount distributor where the coil sits on top of the distributor. Anyway, I had to remove the coil and reinsert the ends of the bail into the distributor watching that they seated properly. It was kind of tricky but when I did that and then slipped the bail over the front onto the top of the coil it really seated that coil firmly and squarely on the distributor and I've never had a problem with moisture since.
You need to check your points. Maybe they are burnt up or not gapped at 15. Maybe there's still moisture in there. The spring off the bottom of the coil can be gently stretched a bit to assure contact. There might be moisture in the spark plug wires. Bend a wire and see if it's cracked. Replace them if needed. I think it's moisture in the distributor and how the coil is seated on the distributor. Two bolts and the distributor comes off for a good look-see, clean-up, and timing.

distributor may be grounding out.remove it from tractor.remove condenser screw that makes contact with points.note insulitor underneath screw.now take small peace of 3-8 rubber gas line maybe 1/2 inch long slide over insulitor where screw was.remove thin piece of copper that connects points breaker arm to distributor.route a stronger peace of copper across top of new insulator(rubber gas line)connect condenser to screw on breaker arm not where it was orginaly.now reassemble distributor to engin make sure spring from bottom of coil makes contact with new piece of copper .i had to do this with my 9 two years ago works great we had same problem power to coil not to plugs .distributor was shorting out 50 year old insulator wore out from years of changing points and you could not see what was going on inside distributor.hope this helps.
