my lift lever on 49 8n moves very freely and falls while bush hogging. also after using the bush hog for an hour or so and heat the fluid up the lift functions very poorly, I have to rev up the engine to lift up. should try some kind of adjustment or possible rebuild? if rebuild, pump or piston? THanks for any help..

I forgot to address your problem with the weak lift. It is usually not the pump that is at fault but the other components of the system.

Click on the link below to see my file on trouble shooting the 8N lift.

I did some work in the position control spring I mentioned in the other reply. It was a way proud 1/64" so I put a spacer between the bushing and the washer. Now I got it well within the 1/64" spec. Maybe only 1/10,000 over the 3-9/16". Close enough for sure.
I had to put a lot of adjust on the shorter impliment control spring so I know the lift arms will show a real difference when I get it running. I figure someone tried to adjust the impliment control spring to make up for that bent control linkage (arm).

I'm working on an 8N lift. The piston skirt clearance is at least 0.003" and the spec is 0.0025" so I ordered a piston and it won't be here until tomorrow or next day. Waiting for the part, I don't know how much I can hone the cylinder. Do you have a maximum bore spec or the new piston OD? That 0.0025 is a pretty tight clearance. Maybe it's different for the o-ring piston I ordered.
One other thing, the longer 'position control spring' is suppose to be within 1/64" of 3-9/16" long. I run out of adjustment 1/64" longer than 3-9/16". That's reading a rule and I'm pretty sure when I put the calipers on it it will be a long 1/64". The $116 (!!!!) shaft w/yoke the spring is mounted around might have been repaired (it has a nice looking weld on the end where it attaches to the yoke) and ended up long so I can't adjust it right. The problem is that the arms drop more than 3" when the selector lever is switched and the book says that spring is too long. The control linkage was bent too and I believe getting that straight will help, not sure. Should I figure how to get more adjustment on that spring? I think I can make something from a washer but maybe there's another way around it.
How's it coming on the boat?

There is supposed to be a cork friction disc on the touch control handle between the two round metal disc. The outside metal disc is supposed to be movable by tightening the nut on the end of the control shaft that the touch control lever and friction disc is attached to. Tighten the nut some if the friction disc seems to be still intact. It is appears that the cork disc is missing or deteriated you should take the nut off and pull the outside disc off to replace the cork disc. Doing this is easier said than done. Most of the time the aluminum disc is going to be seized to the shaft and heat is going to be required to remove it from the shaft. Be careful when heating that you do not melt it. If and when you see small bubbles begin to form on the aluminum it is about to become molten and it is time to withdraw the heat and try to gingerly pry the aluminum disc off the shaft.

Be sure to remove the outer half of the track that the lever moves on and that holds the stop lock before you try to remove the disc or you can remove the two small bolts that attach the touch control lever to the aluminum disc.

If you aren't using it now go to the thicker 'mild EP gear oil' conforming to Ford spec M-4864-A & B S.A.E. 90 above freezing and S.A.E. 80 below freezing.
I replace the missing friction disk with a piece of the thick fiber gasket material, I think it was 1/16". What ever it is you get at the auto parts store. If that doesn't last I'll try to get the real deal in there. You may just need to tighten the nut on the shaft the touch control turns.

There was a friction disc on the hytrol lever.. perhaps you's needs replacing.

Also.. while a thicker oil may haelp you if you are running the thin uni-tran stuff.. most likely you are seeing the wear in the system..

Probably a piston and ring job.. though could be badly worn pump and or relief valve hanging.

Pull a side cover and see if you have oil pouring out the mouth of the hyd cylinder... If so, consider a NAA piston and oring/backup washer...
