(I'm posting for Brother in Law with 8N problem)

I've taken out the pto shaft about three times now and even had a mechanic come out to help me figure it out. Seems like the specs on the shaft is about 30 7/8" length with 1 3/8" splines and the old part is only 30" long - it works (the old one) but is buggered up on the outside coupling side and the bearing surfaces where the seals go are bad (that's why I pulled it in the first place to replace seals that were leaking). The mechanic tried to heat them up and pound em off -- wrong! Marred up things even more. I should have had them just cut them off but no, I decided to buy a new shaft with seal assembly and now it won't work either. Guys at Ford say it should work!!!! Right! Maybe I'm dealing with a hybrid situation with a 8N motor and jubilee body?

Any suggestions or hints greatly appreciated!
Thanks.
Ron

If the old one works and it's 7/8" shorter than the new one that won't fit how about cutting the new one to length?

While there isn't any possible, feasible combination of parts that would mate an 8N engine to a Jubilee body or even an 8N tranny to a Jub rear housing, it is possible to mate the front half of a 9N/2N/8N to the back half of a Harry Ferguson TO model tractor. There is at least one of those floating around this message board. A weirdo swap like that might give you a funky PTO length, too. You might ask over on the Fergy board what length the shaft in a TO-30 is.

Ron..... ....you should know:
All replacement PTO's will be 6-spline 1-3/8" 9N/2N/8N PTO length = 30 7/8" long
NAA Jubilee PTO lenght = 30 3/16" long

I don't know why or what might have been changed inside your tranny gutts so the NAA PTO would fit/drive your 8N's hydraulic pump. You may end-up doing a tranny-dectomy (split the tractor at the tranny/differential housing) to find out what has been changed.

Its not uncommon to have a NON-ORC coupled brushhog warp the PTO shaft, but replacing the N's PTO with a NAA shaft? Well, strange things happen out on the farm..... .....Dell, the self-appointed ORC safety preacher

Aside from the bearing carrier/seal differences between the 9n and the 2n/8n .. The regular 'kit' should just slide in, unless I'm missing something here.. ( don't have my manuals here at work ).

Is it possible that the old pto shaft was shorter due to a piece being broke off at the end.. and then dressed to work with a hacksaw/file ?

Line the two shafts up and look at the bearing/seal surfaces.. as well as the pump drive.. see if they are the same.. or if you do really have an oddity.

Question. Does your lift cover have the position control knob, and do your rear hubs hav a big nut retaining the hubs.. or are they smooth?

Reason i ask is because, as someone else pointed out... we have seen at least one fergy rear end mated to an N engine...
