Can anyone tell me what a front mount hydraulic pump that fits the N tractors is worth? I just found one and I don't want to pay too much (obviously) Thanks guys.

I use only gear pumps and can start them OK. On 8Ns I use 10 gpm @ 2000 rpm, 2000 psi. This is a good match for the engine and gives good loader cycle time. New cost is about $155 from Surplus Center. An equivalent Vickers vane pump costs $370. Call 800.488.3407 for a catalog.

Hello Rocky, I prefer a Vane pump when the power source is going to be from an engine crankshaft. The reason is that the Vane Pump does not start pumping until the engine's rpm is high enough cause the vanes to extend and pump fluid. By that time the engine has started. This feature is very important in cold weather. The Vane pump is more efficient then the gear pump. The advantage of a gear pump is the price. It is less expensive. The big down side is that it pumps when the input shaft is turned....so when starting the engine in cold weather the starter must not only turn the engine over, it must also pump cold hydraulic oil. I hope this is helpful in deciding which type pump is for you.

can you give me a ballpark value (price) on both pumps? You have a good point about turning cold, thick hydraulic fluid. I hadn't thought of that.

Rocky, a vane pump is twice the price of a gear pump. While the vane pump is used in many different applications, it 'shines best' when coupled to an engine's crankshaft. It was designed to have a "no-load start" feature so the engine wouldn't have to start under load. A side benifit is that the vane pump is very efficient. What that means to the tractor loader operator is that high engine rpm is not needed to get a responsive lift from your loader. You can over load your tractor if you get a pump that is too large for it. In other words, when scooping a load of dirt, your tractor should be able to fill the bucket with dirt and lift the bucket at the same time with out lugging the engine. Of course, if you get a pump that is too small, you have to W---A---I---T for the bucket to lift. This is my opinon. I like a responsive, even aggressive lift. My NAA (Davis loader powered by a vickers vane pump) at 1500 rpm, will lift from ground level to fully extended in six to seven seconds. You want to remember that hydraulics can hurt you. I speak from experience. Hoses under pressure, with just a pin hole leak, can cut you like a knife. If you are traveling with your tractor's bucket extended and a hose breaks, the bucket will drop like a rock and dig into the ground. Your tractor will stop....you will not. The result is a shower of hot hydraulic oil as you are being thrown from the tractor. So always replace all questionable hoses...it is a good investment. You should make sure the relief valve on your loader's hydraulic system is set at the correct pressure. People tend to turn the pressure up to get the loader to lift more. My message is becoming too long, but if you would like me to walk you through the steps of adjusting your loader's relief valve...just email me. Also you can see a picture of a Vicker's Vane Pump on my web site.

I hope this is helpful.
