I see references to an inspection plate with a dipstick on the left side of Ns, but mine only has the pto lever. Am I missing something, or is that it, w/o stick?

It is possible that it was retro-fitted with an early 9N inspection plate. They had no hole for a dipstick there as the stick was located on the top of the tranny.

Unless someone has "modified" your tractor there should be a tranny dipstick. Sit on the seat in normal driving position, look behind your RIGHT foot, you'll see the right inspection plate. There should be a hump in the plate and on top of the hump should be a dipstick. Yours may be broken (as is mine) but there should be a cap there. if so, just pull the cap up.

Look back a couple of pages for "Servicing an 8N" by "Mike T". He has a picture of his and the handle is broken also.

If for some unknown reason there is absolutely no dipstick, just remove the bottom bolt from whatever kind of inspection plate is there, and fill until the fluid starts comming out. Tranny will be full.

The dipstick plate is on the right side. You don't have a dipstick in for the hydraulic oil? You can remove the left side but it's a little tricky getting the shifter back in there right.

There is no hydro dipstick, unless I'm a dipsh*t.

Uh, well, call yourself what you will, but unless somebody has blanked it off for some unknown reason or lost it, the right 6" round inspection cover just below the seat should most definitely have a dipstick in it. There is a raised area on the cover that the dipstick fits into. Sometimes the finger pull gets broken off, but the collar and stick should be there. PTO shifter on the left, dipstick cover on the right.

A lot of the dip sticks have had the loop broken off on purpose. When these tractors were new, nearly everybody rolled cuffs in their overalls or jeans. The cuffs would catch the loop, pulling it out and loseing it. I've lost some, and intentionally broken the loops off of some.
