Well, Finally had a chance to get back on the 2N today. As before all was good for about 25 minutes. The first time I was having problems with this, I thought bad governor spring. Tightened as it was loose. Then it was suggested to open up the main jet on the carb a little. No change. So, Here is what is going on:
I'll start the tractor and head to the field to do some hoggin', it will run great for about twenty minutes, and really loose power. I'll depress the clutch. It might stall, or may come back to a useful engine speed. I'll try cutting again, and the whole thing starts over again, after only five minute. I'll dis-engage the PTO and will feel like a bull ride 'til I get to the driveway off the field. It may stall in the process, or I hear it running so poorly I shut it off. After it's off, I'll hear a liquid "Glug Glug" sound, and it will start right up and run where ever for a few minutes. I think to myself, maybe my gas tank is not vented (as gas sloshes out of it all the time) so I try running with no gas cap. Same thing. It will stall, I hear a "Glug Glug" then I can start it again. Oh, remember my driveway? It seems to do fine heading back to the house (about a 1/4 mile). I'll get back to the house, figure it's cleared up, head back out to the field, and it's the same all over again!!!!
At this point, I could really use some advice.
Thanks
Adam

Cheep and easy but might not fix

Mine was running poorly at times over the last few days mostly after it had been run awhile. After putting more fuel in and it would run better.

Cleaned the glass bowl. It had a very little water and trash, maybe less than a1/8 inch ball. The glass did fill up when the gas was turned back on. Took the plug out of the bottom of the carburetor and let the contents drain just for good measure. Set the carb screw to one turn since I had been fooling with the screw when the engine ran bad. Purred like a kitten all day Saturday and almost worked me to death in the heat.

If it'll start when hot, it's not your coil... takes a long time cooling down before a bad coil will "rejuvenate." It's sounds like air flow or gas flow -- make sure you air cleaner is clean & change the oil in it. Make sure you have gas flow out carb drain. If all OK, must be vapor locking the gas line somewhere along the line -- reroute or insulate. Let us know what you find.

Is the glug-glug from water boiling in the engine? Should not cause it to stall. When hot check to see that water is circulating in the radiator (look down the filler neck with the cap off). Just leave the cap off until hot. That way you will not get a gush in the face when removing the cap.

Make sure the radiator fins are clean of weed seeds and other material.

I would agree with the hot coil idea causing the problem. Maybe the engine is getting really hot causing the coil to get hot from radiator air.

Good luck,
Roger in Iowa

What about the fuel filter? There is an inline filter that could be plugged. The sound you describe makes me think of fuel not gettting to where it needs to be. Also make sure you open the valve to the correct position. I believe 2 turns is the main tank and fully unscrewed is the reserve tank... Let us know...

No inline fuel filter, but I did notice something odd... I removed the fuel bowl to clean. Really not that bad. While I had the chance, I opened up the valve (mostly to get a little fresh gas to clean the glass) and fuel would pour out nicely. But, when I reinstalled the glass bowl and turned the valve on, the bowl would not fill.... It was not until after the engine was running that fuel run into the bowl... Is it supposed to work that way???
Thx

My glass bowl does fill after it has been dumped.

I intend to blow backwards through the bowl and off/on valve (using a piece of flexible tubing) to dislodge any sediment in the tank. Afterwards the bowl will probably collect more trash. It is almost impossible to avoid water, rust sediment and trash when gasoline is transferred from pump to can to fuel tank. My first car a 1949 Ford had a glass bowl fuel filter and it was forever collecting junk.

Fuel bowl sounds ok.. that air bubble can't go anywhere till you run the engine and drain the gas in the carb bowl.. then the needle opens... That says your needle is seating good too.

As someone else mentioned.. check the air filter for obstructions, and do you have your gas line routed in any other manner than oem?

Check your spark when it goes to stalling.. keep an extr plug with you.. sounds like you may have a spark issue.. even if that issue is just a fouled plug not fireing.. etc.

Cap look ok? no excessive play inthe rotor? rotor striking any of the contacts?

I'd bet the problem is not in the fuel, but in the ignition system. Sounds like either a bad coil or ignition swith. Try jumping around the ignition switch and see if that helps. If it doesn't, try a new coil. As the coil heats up it begins to short causing weak sparks, but it will run fine after it cools, then give you trouble after its warm. Hope this helps, let us know.

Should mention, it starts up strong and runs for a bit til it happens all over again in a few minutes (when the engines hot) I'm familiar with the sympoms of the ignition switch, as I replaced that a few monthes ago. I'm sure a new coil would not hurt, but the fact that it starts and runs "hot" (with no choke) leeds me to think the problems elsewhere...
Thx

Maybe you should remove and clean that air cleaner. It can glug-glug I suppose.
