HELLO, I HAVE AN 8N THAT I PUT A BACKHOE ON. IM PRETTY SURE ITS JUST TO BIG BUT HOPEING FOR SOME SUGGESTIONS. I BELIEVE IT CAME OFF A NAA TRACTOR. IT FIT WITH NO PROBLEMS BUT IT WORKS REAL SLOW. THE OLD 8N DOES SMOKE AND DOES NOT SEEM TO BE THAT STRONG. IM NOT REAL SURE WHAT TO DO. SHOULD I THINK ABOUT REBUILD OR IS THAT JUST A WASTE OF TIME? EVEN IF I DO THAT IT STILL MIGHT NOT BE STRONG ENOUGH.MY THOUGHT IS EITHER BUY A BIGGER TRACTOR(MAY NOT HAVE A WIFE AFTER THAT)BUT NOT SURE WHAT ALL THIS HOE WILL FIT. OR SELL HOE AN BUY SMALLER ONE, ITS FOR MY OWN USE.ANY HELP OR IDEAS WOULD BE GREAT

The other guys are right, your internal pump just wasn't made to run external hydraulics like that. One of those add-on PTO hydraulic pumps should solve your problem. They are splined for 1 3/8 PTO's. But, new ones cost a fair chunk of change, and I don't see used ones hardley ever.

Unfortunately you are facing the problem generated by the difference in PSI and GPM flow of the two very different pump styles. I am afraid that there is not much of a way to overcome that.

If it were me, and I had this problem, I'd gather all the information I could get. Then I'd pop onto the link provided, find the phone # and give Zane a call in the evening when it's cool down yonner. Good luck, keep us posted

You didn't say if it is an older backhoe or one of the newer 3 point hitch mounted.
In the late '50's we had a Sherman backhoe on an 8N. It had the multiple levers for each movement and was a lot slower than today's machines, but it did the work we wanted it to do.
I'm looking for a Sherman to put on an 8N but not looking very agressively.

Search the internet for info on the backhoe. See if you can find out what HP is recommended to run the dang thing. If you get your 8N running good you have 26hp. You need info. You need to know if you can deliver the hydraulic flow and pressure needed to power the backhoe. First thing, find out what is recommended for the hoe. Second, compare that to what you can get out of the 8N or the add-on hydraulic pump.
Experimenting blind can get expensive and frustrating. Lot of wasted work and time, too.
