I just bought an 8n that appears to be a later model (side distributer/proofmeter). When I got it home, I scraped away the crap over the serial number and found that it reads "A-6-285" I scraped and searched for more letters/numbers. Is this a replacement engine from some other source? I can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.

Somewhere I read about replacement engines having different serial numbers. Darned if I can remember where I read it, nor can I remember if it was talking about factory replacements exclusively. Regardless, I would expect replacement engines to carry different serial number designations.

Paul;

That lever is for a Sherman transmission. Probably a step-up. It does appear to be a very good looking tractor.

Yeah, that's where I scraped . . . and I have no idea how the thing that looks like an 8n and has all the other characteristics (old red paint on the engine that I scaped through, Ford stamps on the sheetmetal, etc.) has this number. Is it possible that somewhere along the line somebody replaced the engine with something totally different?

Paul
