I am replacing my rear seals in the Trumpet and the new one I got does not look like the old one. It is not as rugged looking and there is only one metal side. Does the metal side go toward the wheel or differential? There is a rubber seal on the side away from the metal rim support for the seal.
Thanks,
Alex

It's the rubber lip that determines the orientation of a seal. The lip on the seal points in toward the fluid.

You need to know something if you will work with seals. This is important.
A new seal can't seal on a pitted, grooved shaft. You must recondition the shaft, at least where the lip of the seal locates. This is not a suggestion, it's a requirement. A bad surface on the shaft won't seal and have a small leak and will tear up the new rubber lip in nothing-flat and be right back to what it was in minutes or hours. No way around putting some elbow grease into reconditioning the shaft, however...there's a trick.
A lot of times a guy can insert a spacer (paper card stock, gasket material or anything) to move the seal enough to run on new, good shaft.
