Has anyone ever replaced the gas engine on an 8N with a Kubota, Perkins or other diesel engine? Is so, what were the major hassles. Have an 8N with a cracked block and either must find a new block or try an alternative engine.

In the book "Great tractor builders, Ferguson" By Allan T Condie there's a article about a 9N having a Perkins Diesel installed and a TE-20 .
As everyone said it will be expensive with some modifications. The engine is a Perkins P3.

Im thinking I would go with an original engine from a boneyard , rebuild it if your old old one is beyond repair , converting to anything else is just asking for big problems . If you have the big bucks and the time , go for it .

Bill,

I can understand your desire to repower an N with a diesel. I love 'em, but there are lawn tractors with more h.p.! I think a little 4 cyl. Diesel with about 30-40 h.p. would be SWEET ! There is a booklet put out by "Farm Show" magazine called "How to repower anything". Get one of these and be inspired to chose an engine and start searching for a good machinist. I know of Ford flathead V-8 and 6 cyl., Small block Chevy, Later Ford V-8 and Chrysler engines etc. having been fitted to these tractors. Go for it !

Bill..... ...There were close to 1 MILLION flathead engines N-Ford tractors made. Replacement engines are very common and they FIT. Remember, your N-Engine is part of the chasssis and weight carrying member. Any off-brand replacement engine has to deal with that.

Me? Iff'n I just had to use a "different" engine in my N-Tractor, I'd try and fit a real Ford flathead V-8 engine with exhaust pipes to the sky. Such music, sigh..... ...Dell

Jack..... ...yes, an adaptor is necessary to convert the Ford flathead V-8 to mate to the N-Tractor tranny. You also need somesort of frontaxle support because the V-8 engine doesn't have the castiron oilpan to support the frontaxle kingpin. Iff'n ya wants more info, do a search on "Funk". Funk Aircraft after WW2 made some great N-Tractor engine adaptor kits for dealer instalation. About 6-8000 Ford flathead 6-cylinder conversion kits and about 250 Ford flathead V-8 conversion kits. Records are vague as a factory fire distroyed much info.

I currently know of 2-outfits selling Ford flathead V-8 conversion kits..... ....Dell

Have you looked around yet? If you are in NWA, there is a good tractor salvage place nearby who might could find a motor.

A few years ago I picked up a catalogue from the now defunct Farm and Fleet store. There were rebuilt and brand new N engines in there. Surely someone else still sells them. But I wonder where those new ones are made, China, India?? Anyone know?
