Replacing Starter - what about Bendix?

Hi guys,
I think I blew the starter on my 8N. I turned the key and pushed the button and it tried to turn over but didn't start. Tried again, and I could hear the solenoid open but nothing from the starter. Parts place suggested that the starter went.

Bought a new starter on eBay and I am wondering what else should be replaced at the same time? Would I need to replace the starter drive Bendix?

Thanks.

R

I thought my starter had gone out a few weeks ago. Took the starter off and bench tested it, and it worked fine, so then I thought it was the battery, but it wasn't the battery either. Turned out to be a rusty negative ground from the 12volt battery to the frame. Shined up the connector and re-connected, and she fired right up. I now check the smaller items (like connections) before larger items (like the starter and battery). Good luck.

Your post begs several question? Was the starter tested or did the parts guy just guess? Could the starter have been stuck on the ring gear and bound up? Were all connections bright and tight? Does the new starter come with a bendix? If so, use it, if not it's a simple enough job to put the bendix from the old on the new. Or buy a new one. Get the improved position drive starter drive if you do. Your choice. Steve 8N 169302
